LMAO.... that just made water come out my nose, guess I should drink and read at the same time...

As for the topic... Yeah, kinda sux, and I bitch and bitch and bitch about the U.S. government and our politicians all the way up... then in the end of my rant, I end it with "The United States IS STILL THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!" really, look around at some other countries... Yeah, we don't get some of the things we want, ect... But, you never get everything you want, life is just not fair...

It's true, the times right now, they need-a-changin... But IM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN.... ;-)

BTW... computers and internet weren't around 100 years ago either. ;-)

Canada, expect half your pay to go to taxes. I know a friend who moved from usa to canada and called me the other day freaking out when he got his first paycheck.. I laughed saying that now you have to learn how to get around the income tax to get most of that back.

Not really. We were nowhere near the scale of England, France, Germany, or Russia - I think that around the turn of the 20th century we ranked somewhere around Portugal.

I think that anyone who is willing to live completely under the conditions of 100 years ago (medical care, transportation, and everything else) should be exempt from those taxes that didn't exist then.

If not - quitcherbitchin ...

You have a point (not certain what the goverment has to do with my indoor plumbing) but when I see what I pay and what I get in return and how money is just handed to GENERATIONS of welfare recipients I get a little unhappy

Anyone who doesn't have a questions about or challenges with the taxes they are paying can kindly pay a "Vick" tax and I'll do as much for you as any welfare recipient

I think it's great to be an American and am willing to pay my fair share but I just liked the view point this raised

More and more getting the feeling there is a lot of "pork" in a lot of projects too

While I'm not exactly middle america the government skim on my income and how it's doled out is out of hand

I would LOVE to go to a national sales tax Vick. I HIGHLY suggest that you pick up and read The Fair Tax Book by Neal Boortz and congressmen John Linder. You won't regret reading it. I enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks for recommendation, I remember you also recommended Presidential Ambition (which is a very good read)

I have always been in favor of a national saxes tax as opposed to an income tax, the national sales tax rate could be tied to the current US budget needs and there would never be a deficit (or surplus) (I've gone into this at length here before)

With that in effect how quickly would "pork/pet" projects get dropped put of other legislation

First of all, if you are only now realizing there is a lot of pork in a lot of projects, then I would suggest that you invest in a good pair of Foster Grants. There is a lot more light out here than there was under that rock.

Did the government give you indoor plumbing? No. Did actions by the government help "spread" indoor plumbing - not just in health regulations, but by somewhat leveling the economic playing field? Youbetchabygollywow.

The world is not the same as it was 100 years ago. 100 years ago many Americans lived in third-world conditions, both in urban and rural areas.

Welfare? That's a hard way to live, and getting a lot harder no matter what stereotypes you believe in or which ranting mad dog on the radio you listen to. I'm sure the cheats are getting theirs, just as the Enrons and the Brown & Root are getting theirs. How many fucking welfare frauds do you think it takes to make one cost overrun on a defense contract?.

Welfare is cheap compared to utilizing the National Defense Highway System (that's what Ike first called the Interstate Highways he began) to quarantene the have-nots from the haves. The costs of welfare in this country are minimal compared to what it would take to hire and deploy enough police and prison guards to keep something approximating order. I do realize that some people are far more comfortable with cracking heads than feeding people, but it's ugly and gets bad press.

I am not a big fan of sales taxes, as they are particularly regressive. I could support a flat tax on all income from all sources - maybe with a floor, but definitely without a ceiling - and with business and corporations treated exactly the same as any other entity under the law. You get a deduction per child, and that's it - and since businesses and corporations can't have children, they get none.

To paraphrase Churchill, the American economic system is the worst you can find, except all others. I don't like paying taxes any more than you do, but I damned sure can't think of anyplace I'd rather live. Is there waste and abuse? Of course there is - there is bound to be, just based on the scale.

For the record, the Federal Budget in 1906 was around 500 million dollars. Expressed in 1990 dollars, that works out to $7,251,000,000.00.

The cost of the Iraq war has been estimated at $177,000,000.00 per day.

Basically, the entire 1906 budget would pay for about 40-some days of the Iraq war.

PD, some things we are not far off but some we have different views (and that's a good thing)

Did the government help fund my cell phone (you can name other things here)? Then why do they get a cut every month?

But let's go beyond that.......

Welfare is not cheap!! You can not hold me hostage by saying it's a lot cheaper that this or that alternative. It's like saying you/we are willing to be extorted and I can't be a party to that.

Think about this PD,
If myself and 20 other people with less monetarily than you (no matter how we got to that position) walked around outside your home for a day and said give us some of your food or we are going to tear down your house and take it, what would you do? (I know that's extreme and I'm stretching). That's how you have welfare sounding to me

How can anyone accept pay (however little, and some for generations) for not working?
I'm not talking entitlements for SS, true disabilities and so on.

On the other side of that coin I do believe that most everyone should have the opportunity to work. Not a right but an opportunity

Education (particularly upper education) should be available to everyone at reasonable prices - and that's what is cheaper than welfare and a far better solution. I still have problems with anyone stating we have to pay welfare or ..........

I like the national sales taxes with certain items excluded such as staple food and single clothing items under $50 so the truly poor can get at least the bare necessities. With a national sales tax much of the so called underground income gets taxed (I'm aware of the other side of the coin, a new black market economy could start)

Imagine (like your friend Lennon said) if we had to realize the cost of the war in Iraq with every purchase, every day

Also a big fan of a balanced budget

You know I am not a fan of a leveled playing field but a national sales tax would have those with more (disposable) income paying the larger share of the nation's taxes. Enrons and Exxon C.E.O's. and so on could be paying a more taxes with a national sales tax

(Do you know our friends at Exxon have reported record profits in 2005 and if I recall correctly one of their C.E.O.'s pulled down a $28,000,000 bonus )

Pardon me, I'm a little tipsy but you can see where I'm going with this (besides to bed to sleep it off)

Well, I DO believe in a level playing field. It's pretty fundamental with me ("all men are created equal" and all that rot).

I'll go for a sales tax as long as the sale of EVERYTHING, including the instruments of capital, are included. Otherwise, I'm for a flat income tax.

The reasons there are generations of people who know of no other way to make a living besides welfare are varied and complex. They involve everything from the history of race relations in America to the misdirected paternalistic do-gooder efforts of liberals.
