SMS used properly is a fast way to deliver a short message. If I just wanna tell someone breakfast is at 3AM at Steak 'n Shake, I can do it in 30 seconds or less. If I do the same thing voice it would be considered rude as fuck.

People who insist upon voice calls suck the hours right out of the day. Most of the people who are "voice people" are also the ones who are a royal pain in the ass to get off the phone, and also prone to call you at the most inconvenient times.

SMS is much like ICQ or email, much less intrusive. You can read the message, prioritize and reply when appropriate.
