This is a breif recap of a thread I typed up earlier, when the machine decided to power down.
We all know this isn't 1997. When people go around throwing comments like "you could do it then, but not now" it's pretty safe to assume it's BS. People were spewing this kind of nonsense when I got into this business back in 2001. People say these things to knock down the motivation of others, because of their own insecurities with their own innovation. Not because of actual lack of demand. New surfers are constantly coming online, and coming of age. New consumers will always be available. With the introduction of new products, demand for niches previously unknown can be created. Markets can be created, thus demand can be created. This is simply a natural phenomenon known to the world of marketing and consumerism. So how significant is the age-old and obviously ill-willed bad faith argument of "you can be successful then, but not now..."? Tons of people speak of this thing called oversaturation, but I think most are misinformed. |

That statement isn’t 100% accurate but then it’s not inaccurate either.
I think any person coming along these days and expecting to earn millions with ease is going to find it painful lesson to learn. Back in 97 it was possible to make the millions with just a few fancy moves, those moves can’t be used these days though. It is possible to make a very tidy sum, however the work that’s needed to both make it and maintain it is massive in comparison to 97. Plus you’ve got to learn, implement and improve the “new moves” that people are using these days. The money is still out there but there are so many people on the dance floor now that you really do need to shine.

Yes, demand will end - it will be on the 10th of October 2008... this is when the last surfer finds and bookmarks a "surfer friendly" MGP. After that it will be counter wankers that will rule the world, until a large meteor hits earth and kill us all...

As so rightly said in "Blazing Saddles" the bitch was inventing the Candygram. I mean...shaving , skimming freehosts ,geo routing traffic , routing traffic by referrer and browser..timon/nixon inventing/refining the popup , my own AVS trick ... These were strokes of fucking genius. People are constantly reinventing or finding new angles. People will still start this year and make fucking millions! I'd compare someone chances of making a fortune in this business to the chances of some kid from Manchester playing for Man Utd. In the 70's a foriegn player meant Scottish , now the catchment area is bigger but there are still 11 slots. Most either make millions and move onto non web ventures and do well. Most either make millions and move onto non web ventures and blow it. Make millions and blow it , "living the life".Try and comeback and just can't get it again Make millions and retire happily to Boca ;-) Make A million then open a board and hope it fixes the loss in income from there affiliate program , but basically end up retiring by early 2006 ![]() I think I am the first to have done this one... Make a few millions , become a drunk and basically bleed money away. Sober up , come back , and make a bloody fortune again ![]() Even out of the class of 2000 at Netpond/Whitcon to the best of my knowledge the following are the only ones doing pretty damn good... Me Anthony Bishop Jayman ( who'd a thought it , eh?) heather , P8 , redlion ( retired doing good in real world)...gone... All the others who are around are basically either earning a living , or not... ( sorry for the rant) |

Hmm.. actually there seems to be two seperate issues here. The one raised by your title and the one in your post. Similar but a tad differet.
As to the title, yes demand can end but that generally only com,es along when something is made completely obsolete toi the point where it is not worth producing anymore because of innovation. As to your post when it comes to adult people can most certainly be successful entering the game nowadays BUT it is on a much harder scale to be able to make it to the top of the lkadder than it was before. |

I stated anyone thinking they can set up now and make the easy millions is in for a shock, there is no easy millions. It takes 3 – 4 times more work now than it did back then, or am I mistaken again? I can’t be mistaken because there’s no Crescent anymore and the billing solutions have changed massively…

ahahahahaha Sounds like you are preparing excuses to fail? There was NO EASY way to make millions then!!! 99% of the people working in this business then did NOT make millions. I'd concede its harder now , but only fractionally. Dude , you sound like someone bitching cause he can't manufacture and market a new car ,whilst saying Daimler , Ford etc had it fucking easy!!!!! LOL Yup , the AVS trick is really bloody simple. But no one did it.And 90% of the people that I told to do it , couldn't. Scottpb couldn't understand how I had 3000-6000 websites and they managed to send him a join each a mth with like 30 hits sent each. When I told him he said "bloddy genius" And I got the idea from Colin's build an empire..(HMM in order to build an empire , I need traffic.Where can I get free traffic? Fuck!! Adultchecks member linklist has tons of traffic!! Fuck even better the only people there have used there credit cards for online porn! FUCK!! build sitres for every niche , have upsells to biche specific paysites (((FUCK tryi ng to get them to join adultcheck , milk the shit out of the people that already have!!!))) Cloaking , and dynamically generating pages targetted to specific SEs is real simple too.... LOL Reread your post mate...it really does sound like... "You early guys , it was so easy , it was so much easier to invent shit" I'll bet you there are more profitable inventions today then there were in 1920 Sliced bread was a fucking simple idea too... But no fucker did it... |

I didn't say it was easy to "invent" all the ways and means you guys did, I said that if you guy's hadn't then someone else would have - I'll give you the AVS trick as no one has really managed it since you. You can't deny that the "one's" that made the millions had an extra bit of help with the fact that Cresent where buying everything they could. There are some quality "inventions" available to webmasters now that make it easier to climb to the top of the hill, but the "work" is involved is harder. Purely because of the masses of webmasters out there and the surfers are more educated than they where then. As for being prepared to fail, I'm not prepared to fail - but I would never rule out that something I do could take a nose dive into the shitter...

To an extent I agree.
Lets get to the nitty gritty... Most of the influx of new webmasters are frankly morons. There choices in careers are basically do this (and hope to make a fortune) or flip burgers , sell drugs , become a pimp. ( I am being very very serious here) Look at the pictures of them and read there posts...most of these people you wouldn't want in your house. Seriously. You don't see the Harvard grads coming in backed by corporate money.... YET!!! Compared to any other business I've been in this is by far the easiest to reach the top level. Why? The competition. I know few other businesses which you can enter , run from your den and within 3 mths build an enterprise likely to NET 3m within a year thereafter. And the best thing about this business? The competition that do do well have such little experience that once they make say 50k/ 100k/200k..they fucking stop to party or whatever....LOL ( I won't again )I won't stop til there is no more money on the table.

I'm not sure it's simple supply and demand. That's part of what it makes it tougher now than in 97, but not all of it.
First off, there is ALWAYS a demand for porn, always has been. And for any new media that comes along, one of the first things that finds a way to exploit it is porn. Porn sold VCRs, porn sold dial up BBSs, and yes porn sells the web. But supply has become more saturated. There's a lot more of it now than there was in 1997, and alot of it is available for free. However, that's only part of the challenge. If you now have something that is unique that no one has seen before and will sell well, you've gotta have some money and some ingenuity to bring it to market effectively. In 1997, there were many free sources of traffic to be exploited. They were essentially strip mined, and yes many people pissed in the well. The result now is the flow of newbies has slowed, and the veteran surfers have become more savvy and cautious. The same is true of the traffic sources such as the SE's. All that said, there are people who enter this business and make good money every year. However, it is definitely tougher and for every one that makes it there's a 100 who never figure out how to make enough money to do much more than pay the hosting bill. |

The people issues in this business are pretty easy to figure out as well.
I agree that a lot of people land in this business that are otherwise incapable of holding any other job of significance. Now I'm not saying they're stupid, usually far from it. But in many cases they have personality issues that make them not cut out to show up for work 8-5 day in and day out and do the same thing every day. Many of those same personality issues also make them predisposed to self destructive behaviors or irresponsibility that results in them pissing away fortunes and ending up with nothing. Now that's not to say everyone is in that category. Some end up here just by circumstance and opportunity. And still others follow the smell of the easy dollar. They follow the boom whether it's real estate, technology or porn. They get in, make the money while it's easy, exit when it becomes no longer worth the hassle and move onto the next game. These two groups are the ones who tend to keep their fortunes. There's also another group that has evolved as the industry as matured and grown just a bit. And that is the "employee". There are some good business men running some of these companies, and they hire the best folks they can to do what needs doing. There's nothing going on there in terms of personality flaws, no one is making or losing a fortune, it's just a job. Only risk for that latter group is "porn taint". Once you've been in porn, it's hard to get back into a non-porn job unless you can figure a way to get the smell of pussy off your resume. |

I´m not complaining about yesterday´s, today´s or tomorrow´s business... but in all seriousness, then this industry is facing shake ups, that will change the landscape within the next few years. Sure demand will still be there, but thats is the least of worries.
