Default NBC Dateline Show

I've fielded calls over the NBC show tonight from people at the show that missed it but heard one was on.

here's the gist of the show for those that missed it...

Some woman gets a spam for spunkfarm , they try and twist it into being her daughters email address.(errr her daughter is less than 1 yr old)

The dumbass redneck religious righters "protect our children" people all say its depriving our children of their innocence and thats the angle NBC Dateline take.

They they try and track down the spammer

So they go to the keeper of records in NY , then they go to Toronto to try and track down Python.

Python are very polite provide some background on how the adult internet works and then politlely ask them to leave.

They then go to internext attend a seminar and trick Aly into admitting its owned by python.

the question from the floor to Aly goes something like this..

"How does spunkfarm convert"
"Huh"
"Its not pretty"
--big laugh--
"It did well when it first launched."

they then hound down a couple of the python guys and eventually they give the details of the spammer.

the guy then arranges a meet with the spammer under a ruse.

The spammer trys to sell the guy a mail list.
The journo reveals he is a journo and gets the spammer to apologise to the chick.

The end...

The program was angled how it hurts children etc etc etc.

It was a pile of ass..IMHO.

1.)The woman prolly signed up for a site LOL
2.) They did describe that the affiliate gets a % of the sale. But no one said spamming children is moronic ( not from a moralistic aspect ,purely a finacial aspect...children don't have credit cards)

It really was a dumb story over taking the innocence of minors.
Making offices appear sleezy as possible and trying to give the impression that everyone associated with this business is scum...the usual right wing family values republican crap..

The Fact of the matter will prolly be spunkfarm gets incredible signups tonight LOL

And that 85% of the guys that were agreeing with there wives how disgusting sites like that are will sign up later this evening.

I'd like to ask Python what made them give up the name of the spammer though?

Another thought...

The program did not from what I saw (I missed the first few minutes) imply ANY illegal activities either on the part of The website operators nor on the part of the Canadian Mailer.

It was purely a MORAL VALUES issue.

Frankly the mailer didn't even look that shocked. And then he converted like a good 'un and asked for forgiveness...

Call me cynical....lol..hmmmmm

But I have dealt with Pyton in the past ( non-mail funnily enough) and would gladly again in the future .

Think about it...

Basically a lot of foreigners came to Canada and told some Canadians that they were very naughty people.

They couldn't say they were breaking any laws , all they could say were "They were a bit naughty" LOL

The American Religious Republican moral values right wingers are pissed with us Canadians...

Oh dear , how sad , never mind

One thing I found interesting was that the entire show hinged purely around the morality of sending the mail. As I am sure they would have pounced on it that implies to me there was no illegal act or liability whatsoever on the part of the Canadian mailer.

I also found it interesting that the story was run by a subsiduary of Microsoft.

i still say the way the handled it was completely fucked up and it looks like an agenda to help the 2257 crap go through.

At the start of the show they said nothing done was illegal. I could understand Python canceling the account and giving the personal information to the proper authorities if anything had been done illegally. But, I see no reason for Python to give out the information to a private party regardless of the legality of the action.

What I'd like to know is how freaking OLD this taping was? I mean - how long has it been since Aly was with Python? And they call this Dateline? Should be DatedLine... forget the "breaking" anything... this is at least two Vegas shows old... isn't it?

Actually, this kind of thing can be a good thing for the industry...the more "taboo" we are, the more people want what we have. If hardcore porn was too available, they wouldn't come to us looking for it. It also helps when people see us as this mysterious industry full of shady people who will provide them pleasure.

Whenever I return from conventions, my friends don't want to to hear some bullshit about 2257 seminars, dining with fellow webmasters and talking about our wives and kids, etc. They want to hear about debauchery...people shitting in urinals, living like rockstars, snorting coke off the backs of tranny hookers and 100's of nude women just running around with their tits hanging out. Even though there is MUCH less debauchery at our tradeshows than the typical insurance salesman convention, evertyone wants to think of us as rebels with no cares in the world.

A long time ago, I got an email from someone I knew in high school. We exchanged the usual "catch up" things, and I told him I was an adult webmaster. His next email told me he was taking a business trip to Dallas soon and could I fix him up with somebody? How we got from "working on the computer" in SoCal to having an intimate knowledge of Dallas hookers I know not. Apparently, everyone who has anything at all to do with sexual activities, however remotely, knows everyone else.

The temptation to see if I could find a Dallas transvestite with a sense of humor was overwhelming, though.

The guy was an asshole in high school and grew up to be an asshole adult.

I've been to a lot of conventions and managed to miss the debauchery part completely. Drank a lot of coffee, though. The only time I got drunk was when Pattycake* decided it was a damned shame I'd never had a Black Russian.

There has to be some mileage in suggesting to your senior management and directors that they reprint the toilet roll with "Dateline" on it ;-))

I like that.

The writer in me is twitching, though. I keep muttering "connotations, connotations." As a handout, it's priceless. Different, funny, very likely to stick in the memory no matter how the brain cells are abused.

Ahhhh yes, good ol' dateline. The star of the show was clearly Judson... followed very closely by Chad and his "Porn's always been a good money-maker" line, as he's having a smoke outside with our covert journalist friend.

Nick and anyone else who wants any questions answered as to how and why the guy's info was released can hit me up on ICQ or PM or whatever.

PS - dateline traffic converts really good!!

I just saw this on the MSNBC video archive and came looking to see if anyone was talking about it.
For those that missed it, it's on their archive in four parts. Once you get to the video archive from the link below, click on the menu in the left on "News-Weather" and from there, "NBC News". Then in the video thumbnail offerings on the right you'll see 4 porn stories. Each of them has a little title.
Part 1: "Invasion of porn"
Part 2: "Toronto's porn district"
Part 3: "Hidden cameras in a Vegas internet"
Part 4: "A face to the anonymous"
There's a little scroll bar to the right to look through the thumbnail. Sometimes it'll show you a commercial, just wait through it, the thumbnail you clicked on will play after the commercial.
http://video.msn.com/

I tell ya, a LOT of companies got their name up in this report. And the reporters didn't have to do anything to make Python look bad - they went to the addresses listed on Python's site and what they found were a postal drop box and an empty storefront (getting ready to be a restaurant). The custodian of records for Python, supposedly this huge rich company, was a guy with a crappy apartment. (At least though, they *have* a custodian of records - if he did actually have the records there.)

Now, in defense of the Mom, I truly don't think she signed up for a site. I have an address that I *only* use for my yahoo email lists regarding homeschooling. I get porn spam on it all the time. Assholes go in, join the group, harvest the member list and then start spamming them. My home address, which I don't give out to adult industry folks and don't use at all in conjunction with the adult industry - it gets spammed. My parents don't surf porn (yes, I know this for a fact, I clean off their computers all the time) and they get more spam than they get regular email on their home Cox addresses.

Don't try to say that someone gets spam probably because they signed up for a site or something. The folks on this report have a very valid complaint, and the unethical spammers are the ones getting more and more stringent rules pulled down on our heads. Note I said *unethical* ones, Nick.

A few quick points:

- That was Judson's office, not his apartment
- Judson is 'a' custodian of records, not 'our' custodian of records
- Judson is a photographer
- Lots of companies have PO boxes
- Sometimes records are out of date - its pretty obvious that the empty storefront no longer had anything to do with Python

But you are right about Python, its like.. 2 guys chillin' in a back alley with laptops running the whole operation.. we are a small, insignificant two-bit operation with absoltely no power or influence in this industry.

Media spin is YUMMY.

/sarcasm

Oh please, Steve. *rolls eyes*
Evidently the storefront *did* at one time have something to do with Python, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten that address off of the Python site. And it's Python's responsibility to keep the records up to date, isn't it? If the company isn't even complying with that, how can affiliates expect the company to comply with all of the other important things (like 2257) they're expected to handle? The affiliates watching that program got an eye-opener about the operation.

The "spin" coming out of this is Python trying to skip out of what was shown there. Judson's just a photographer, yet there he was right at the Python booth. The storefront "no longer" had anything to do with Python - yet there it was, from the address on Python's site - a little storefront. Not the nice building and professional atomosphere someone would expect from a company that puffs itself up as much as Python does. That building in Toronto where the "data center" (*cough*) was - yeah. Real class operation going on there, too. You can just see the money mixed in among the dirt at the front door.

Shove the sarcasm and show the professionalism that Aly and Richard showed. (Even though Richard basically lied in the beginning about being able to find the spammer, he was still professional and polite in dealing with the reporter.) A simple "We put up P.O. boxes and a maze of fake addresses to keep this kind of thing from happening" would be sufficient, and it wouldn't make it seem as if you guys can't even keep your records updated.

Im sure it did, as I pointed out. There is no issue with 'compliance', suggesting such implies there is an authority that regulates a company's ability to move, which there is not. Also, I can assure you that there are many affiliates who work with either myself or someone else on the team who would speak to our high level of professionalism and experience. I would suggest that the only person who is in need of an 'eye-opener' is yourself.

Skip out on what? Are you implying that Judson is involved in some conspiracy with Python? Have you ever met Judson? lol... He was also around our booth quite a bit at Internext this past weekend, especially given his new found celebrity :P It was a happy coincidene (for John Hawkenberry) that he happened to be at our booth when he decided to show up with his hidden camera at Internext Vegas 2004. Please, put your tinfoil hat away.

There are many companies that 'puff' themselves up more than Python and there is nothing I need to say to that, reality is what it is but you can choose to believe whatever you'd like. You are cordially invited to visit Python's Corporate offices located in Toronto's beautiful 'porn district'. I would be more than happy to put your misconceptions of our operation to rest.

I dont recall being confrontational or unprofessional, I was simply clarifying some misunderstandings you clearly had about Python put forth by Dateline's garbage 'journalism', and I will not be involved in the 'shoving' of anything, thank you. There is the truth and there are lies, and I apologize if I do not take kindly to the propogation of lies about our company.

If anyone wants to know anything about our company I am always available to answer questions you may have - ignorance breeds fear and contempt. Dateline is as good a resource for information about Python as the Weekly World News is for news.

Ooh, look. No "/sarcasm" on the end of that one. An actual attempt at a professional reply, although it's like closing the barn doors after the horses have gotten out. And still, can't keep the tone professional anyway. Ah well.

On that count, Dateline did a pretty bang-up job.

Tell me, do you give personal information out to any reporter, or just those in wheelchairs?

Go print some more toilet paper and keep deluding yourself about what a class act you've got there.

Hi Carrie, it's been a while

I've personally spoken to Steve a few months ago on ICQ, there wasn't a question that I could drag up no matter how good or bad that he didn't answer with honesty.

That being said we (me and my other) may be moving back into adult very soon and I'd have no problems sending my traffic to Python!

But it is good to see you around these parts again and I hope it's not just a quick Python piss and away

If you would like to know any of the actual _facts_ underlying this story, please contact me anytime in a less public forum, board 'drama' is not my style and I regret the fact that I allowed myself to be dragged into it. Also, you can add yourself to the list of people who dont hold Python in high regard, but as I said before there is a reason we are still successful in this business - it is because of the good realtionships that have been built over time with our loyal webmasters and partners.

This is the last ounce of effort I am putting into this thread.
