Very similar subjects have been the topics of many dinner conversations among some of the Atlanta crew for the better part of the last month...
My take is that Oprano is, and always has been, the water cooler for the mature members of the industry. The demographics here include many people who go back to 97-98 and mostly users over 30, and many WELL over 30. The conversations reflect it. I've said it before, a successful board is one that draws like minded individuals who want to have converations with each other together. In that regard, Oprano is an overwhelming success. The trick is if you want to make a business of it, how do you make that work? As has been stated already, innovation isn't happening at such a rapid pace. And when the brightest minds do make a discovery, it is typically not in their best interest to share it now. The big boys in the industry now roll out new stuff or turn big deals on average how often? Maybe once a quarter? Every 6 months prior to Internext? We might hear about a couple of big deals every quarter. Advertising has become more of an exercise in letting people know you're still around and have money to spend and thus can afford to pay your affiliates in many cases. Love it or hate it, most of the business is being done by the TGP Monkeys in terms of quantity. They're not doing 5, 6 and 7 figure deals, but instead there's a lot of 3 and 4 figure deals and B2B action going on with people selling traffic, gallery spots, scripts, content, hosting, etc. The point of entry both intellectually and monetarily in this industry is so low that until something major changes to thin the herd, the TGP hoards are going to represent the majority of the industry in terms of population. And unfortunately it is virtually impossible to have bulk traffic these days without doing a bit of TGP work. All of the other sources of traffic have all but dried up. We've all had to learn how to deal with ALOT of water in our soups, stews and gumbos.... |
