interesting choice of words. i was just thinking recently how the most advanced civilizations of the world that did not collapse economically, were almost all toppled by the most primitive peoples of the time - mongols, goths, huns, vikings etc etc. those people who were always considered a minor threat until one day everything clicked into place, whether it was technology, new, faster boats, new metals/better weapons... or something as benign as a couple good years of farming and raising enough horses to venture farther, raid more neighbors, kill more warriors, capture more weapons and continue on until they were an army taking control of most of Europe/Central Asia and/or the Middle east.
