None of us likes KP and the stigma it places on our industry but how do you fight it.
Lee's proposed system, imo, will find mainly people marketing in ways the sponsor does not like and thats fine, but it will really have no bearing on the KP. So, how do we stop it, or at least disassociate ourselves from it ? First any effort will have to be more or less industry wide. That is what asacp is about and I feel that using asacp as an umbrella in any effort is a wonderful idea. Currently asacp is (imo) basically a clearinghouse for reporting KP.. That is needed but I think the base of asacp should be expanded. Currently according to asacp if you are a member flying the asacp fklag you have agreed to adhere to the asacp code of ethics: ************************************************** ASACP Member and Sponsor Code of Ethics Comply with the child pornography laws of the United States and European Union governments. Promptly report incidences of suspected child pornography to ASACP. State on site that all models were over 18 at the time of the creation of depictions. Do not use keywords or search terms that denote child pornography, such as, but not limited to: kiddie, child, pre-teen or any form of lolita, etc. Click here to see complete list. Only do business with companies that adhere to ASACP Code of Ethics. Display an Approved ASACP Member button on your site as a testimonial that your site does not contain nor condone child pornography. ************************************************** But I do not know of any policing that is actively done to ensure these criteria are met. Therefore it is an honor system of sorts, relying on someone reporting that a member is no longer in compliance. Please forgive me if I get any of this wrong, if things I say are not there are there then I don't know about them and they at least have to publicized better. I think that asacp should start an "approved by" or "certified by" program. It would start at the content producers. Each content producer that joined would submit their various sets at release for certification by the asacp. asacp would go through a review of the sets and list the set identifiers in their database as being certified. Member sites (paysites and free sites) would only use asacp certified content on their sites. In return, member sites would be indemnified against litigation on those sets that are certified. In addition, member sites, by joining would be agreeing to have their sites spidered by a policing script such as the one Lee proposes. Member sites at the sponsor level would only accept affiliates that were also participating in the "certified by" program. These sites (free sites, avs, tgp, linklists) would be agreeing to the same policing script as the sponsor sites. This overcomes the privacy issues that were raised with Lee. I would suggest that free site builders, etc would be admitted into the certification program at no cost, thereby not keeping anyone out just because they have not reached steady income streams yet. There could also be various other certfications issued to yahoo groups, newsgroups etc... and again, by joining the certified by program, they would be agreeing to be policed by asacp. The end result of this would be a community within the industry which would only consist of those that are certified to be involved in the fight againsty kp... As the community grew larger and more sponsors were only accepting affiliates that are in the program etc, there would be a snowball effect of sorts. Hopefully within a short period of time the sites that are not in the certified by program become the odd man out. This would all be launched with a fairly large media blitz to make the public aware of what is going on and to gain their support. With public awareness of the project, surfers trying to avoid certain marketing practices and content would only need to go to certified by asacp lists and vendors to assure that they won;t end up having to wipe their drives.... This would not eliminate kp on the net by any means, it would however make a boundary around sites willing to be certified as KP free and would therefore identify who is definitely NOT part of the problem. It would also avoid the inherent privacy problems involved in Lee's approach of doing it just at the sponsors level. There will still be the need for various sponsor scripts to check for other cheat methods, but the asacp as a third party would be taking care of the policing at the top level. Anyway, that is the short version of a hatchling of an idea... any comments, holes, problems, etc... would be appreciated. Last edited by sarettah at Jun 12 2003, 02:30 PM
