Default Domestic wiretaps without a warrant

Well, now we have the president admitting he authorized domestic wiretaps without a warrant. And he and the AG have justified it by basically saying that as CIC and with the resoultion congress signed about the war on terror that it basdically gives him ABNSOLUTE power to do whatever the fuck he pleases regardless of what the constitution says.

Of course this is but one of MANY examples of freedoms of citizens being abused. Did you go to Vegas over New years last year? Then the government knows pretty much everything you spent money on there from plane tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals, and more. All sorts of lovely stuiff happening these days...

Yup, that kind of attitude drives me nuts. It's so easy to say, "but it's not happening to me" and then too late realize that down the road it very well might be you or that as rights erode further a diofferent aspect will affect you.

I don't like it - but the fact is this has been going on for so many years it isn't funny. Bush is the first one stupid enough to admit it though.... Most likely someone had dirt on him that tied him to some covert NSA ops - and he came forward before it became a bigger scandal than it would of.

Not saying it's right at all - but if I'm right (I haven't been following up on the news ALOT lately) he's claiming it was involving the patriot act etc etc etc..

Scary part? We're having our cellphones tapped for much much less - and the government can tell every place we have went during the day.. all of us. How? Cell phones ... Literally tracking devices on top of being able to monitor our audio.

Scary shit, but seriously what can you do ? Stay Legal, that much is for sure lol ...

GW probably invokes the Patriot Act when Laura bitches at him for not flushing after a dump and failing to put the toilet seat down.

I hate big government. However, right now I am more afraid of terrorists then I am over Big Brother. I think most American's agree with me. Over time this will change.

I see where you are coming from Mike. I just think it is a false choice when our leaders say we have to choose between the two.

I just have a hard time believing that anyone thought this was not happening, since WW2

Bush just happened to be the guy that actually stood up and said hell yes we are doing it, and we will continue to do it.

Not sure if I want to applaud or just shake my head and chuckle to myself.

It went on with abandon from the 40s into the mid 70s.

From the mid 70s on, they have had a Federal Court system in place to rubber-stamp DOJ requests, basically making warrantless searches unnecessary.

I'm sure that there has been occasional "extralegal" monitoring - the attitude of the Reagan Administration toward trivialities like the rule of law is well known - but it would not suprise me if this was the first wholesale practice of this kind since the mid-70s.

Of course there are things that are done and have been done for a long time. And there is a reason no one goes public with it. Potato head is just too stupid to know when to keep his mouth closed. (Which is actually, for him, always.)

Good point.

In todays world where one vial of small pox, or a suitcase nuke could literally kill hundreds of thousands of fellow citizens, I am comfortable with what the gov't is doing.

I find it amusing the places that are the biggest targets in the US, tend to be the ones who fight against Bush trying to protect the homeland.

NY Senators should be ashamed of themselves for not supporting The Patriot Act and other measures. They lost 3,000 constituants in a matter of minutes. ( more then 3 years of war in Iraq)

Red Staters are forced again to defend the Blue Staters.

You are welcome. Merry Christmas!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't the Rep administrations over the years been the "bigger" governments?
Didn't Clinton size down his administration while in office? I remember this from several of his S of the U addresses.

Another question... Why is Bush coming forward with these things? Why would a term 2 president give a damn about what people thought of him? His ass is outta there at the end of this term.

More important. The goverment has always lied to us. Always!

Nuclear bomb? 1950s? Roll under your desk at school, you'll be safe.

Chemical or biological terror? Bush says duct tape your windows.

So how come with a history of lying we could count on, when they couldn't find WMDs, didn't they plant them? The goverment instead "told the truth"?! WTF???

That just totally destroys my entire relationship with my government. Why then? Why? I don't get it.

I didn't want this one to slide by. This is actually the important issue.

What is being done now is being done in the name of something that few want to either debate or delve into too deeply. "Make us safe from terrorists" is as far as the thinking goes.

Later...the public will discover that you can't unring a bell. "Rights" and "privacy" will have long been evaporated; the data has been collected; the people working the data will be loathe to give it up; the technology will have advanced so that data collection has become more and more simple and invasive. Would anyone be foolish enough to trust a "we're not doing that anymore" statement?

My husband likes to look at the grocery receipts, mention the use of the "savings card" and inform me that there is a database listing all of our purchases somewhere. A little thing? Perhaps not. Suppose we purchased large supplies of liquor at the grocery store...and my husband wasn't hired someday because the prospective employers assumed he was a drunk? It wouldn't be such a "little thing" then. Or if we bought cigarettes at the grocery, and they didn't want to hire a smoker. Or someone who so obviously over indulges their pets, for whatever reason.

As a writer, conspiracy plots abound with something as mundane as the receipt from the grocery store.
