Ooh! Hubba-hubba and a half, there, testerosterone laden hunkosaurus!

(I got a "MMMOOOOOMMMM!!!" yesterday that curled my blood. I had to go rescue my 26 year old daughter - from a *dead* spider. Now, I admit I have the creepies over a species of bug or two, but the subcategory known as "bug corpses"? Uh...no.)

I'll be spending the rest of the day trying to figure out why dictionary.com gave me two contradictory definitions of "homonym." In one, sound *and* spelling have to be the same but definition different; in the other sound *or* spelling have to be the same and definition different.

There really should be a law.

(Points to anybody *besides* Drav and Red who can tell me why I was thinking about this in the first place.)

Just to confuse you even more, I found this:

Heteronyms are words that are spelled identically but have different meanings when pronounced differently, usually through accenting different parts of the same word.

For example: Lead, pronounced LEED, means to guide. However, lead, pronounced LED, means a metallic element.

Heteronyms are specific types of homographs in which the different pronunciations are associated with different meanings. Basically, words with one spelling, but two pronunciations and two unrelated meanings.

Homonyms are words that are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings. In other words, Homonyms are words with one spelling and one pronunciation, but two unrelated meanings, such as bear or left or just or pole.

Homographs are words that are spelled the same but differ in meaning, derivation, or pronunciation. Basically, Homographs are words which have one spelling but two pronunciations and two distinct meanings or usages.

For example: Consider the word tear. Does it rhyme with pear/pair/pare? Or with hear/here?

Homophones are words that are pronounced the same but differ in meaning, derivation, or spelling. In other words, Homophones are classified as words with two spellings and two meanings, but only one pronunciation.

For example: Like pear and pair. And pare. These words are spelled differently but sound the same. The English language is riddled with such aural ambiguities.

Now, normally this is the type of thing that would get me high for the rest of the day. However, even for me...this is a tad much.

Heteronyms and Homographs both seem to cover that "content/content" situation.

(Thanks though, Red. I *do* so adore stuff like that, even if periodically my head explodes. )

I do believe I'm over the legal limit on English classes and can tell you right now that all a good English class does is give you a good ear. You will *never* remember the actual rule for why something is right or wrong, but you'll know it when you hear it.

I was a guest speaker at a middle school English class and when I said that to the class I thought the teacher (darling, cute, dedicated teacher that he was) nearly achieved a certain degree of physical release. He nodded at me like a mad thing with a huge grin. The class, of course, also nodded. (Just as children will take as gospel truths something said by anyone other than their parents - even if their parents said the same damned thing, students hang onto every word of the way cool "guest speaker," even if their teacher had been trying to pound the same thing into their little skulls.)

One of the more fun things with that little exercise was finding out about the nickel budget (whatever, schools are broke) the school newspaper had. I handed the principal a check for $50 and said "you just received an anonymous donation for the school newspaper's printing cost, got it?" She smiled and nodded and had a death grip on the check.

OT: I have had my small tastes in the "use of power" in my life. "Power" means different things to different people, and of course the use and/or abuse of power has even more meanings. My tenure with the PTA, etc., gave me quite a taste for the "big fish, small pond" use of power. I rather liked having a large group of people all thinking/saying their personal versions of "don't fuck with this bitch."

How the hell did this thread get from preparing to squash the life out of a newbie poster to a discussion of English class ?

English class was gay.
Worrying about proper English is gay.
Correcting folks improper english is gay.
Discussing English class as if it is interesting to someone is gay.
Responding to this post in any manner is gay.

You are assuming it's a newbie poster.

I have my doubts.

I was just helping Morgan out with her confusion on homonyms.

As far as this asshole, he is the world's greatest proof of reincarnation; no one could get that dumb in just one lifetime.

I doubt that I can prove to you that there were times I was without a doubt.

In other words, your doubts about my ability to not doubt are doubtful.

From the point this thread was created, I was reluctant to click on it due to the sheer stupidity of its title. I avoided clicking on it until now... when I lacked anything better to do. Upon reading the first page, I was was apprehensive about clicking through to view page 2... although I will confess that the content of page 2 seriously appealed to my "bitch" side...

Page 3 has been delightful; Coincidentally, 'it' has not appeared yet on page 3...
