In all fairness, throwing money at education is NOT the answer, IMHO.
Some school districts, here in Oregon have been forced to cut all extra ciricular programs, including any after school care, sports, or other programs, such as thespians, chior, band etc....
in fact they are now only going to 4 days of week school instead of 5 what is next?
they already make people pay for the bus service if your child rides the bus....
I think this is more the core of why people bitch, cause we still pay as much, but the services get cut, it is not about giving them more, it is about REAL accountability, and unfortunatly building more schools, and sending teachers to other countries to teach our way of life, is not the answear IMHO

I just have to go by what I see here - the City of the Atlanta spends more per student than any other school district yet they are always one of the lasts on the lists for tests and overall school preformance.
Most private schools pay less per student than most public schools yet it's widely considered you get a better education there. Private school teachers usually make less than public school so raising the salaries isn't always the answer either
I'll just say I'm VERY glad I don't have to deal directly with the public school system any more.

The teachers unions should be disbanded, there should be a voucher system, and testing for students and teachers. Those who dont meet guidelines should be sent back to school - or if they are teachers FIRED.
Our public education system is a joke.

not everywhere. In the northeast with testing and regents exams, public schols are in top shape. My high school has grown in population fourfold, yet remains in the top 10% in testing scores and average GPA in the US...
I think public education should be renamed inner city public eduction. the suburbs are doing fine

Hiring teachers with an adequate level o education is a good start.
Majrity of school districts will not hire teachers with Masters educations or above. They cost too much. this is because teachers unions determine hiring minimums

Bingo. parents are majorly involved in suburban school districts...
but then again, in the suburbs you have a larger segment of single breadwinner fmilies. Parents that can be there to be involved in their childs school lives.
Poverty in inner city, or the necessity of two paent orking families allows children to fall through the cracks. It is the government's responsibility, through vouchers or tax breaks, to allow parents to work less and become more involved
