I think the fundamental difference is this...

In 98 there was really only really 20 places to send traffic to.
In 98 there was probably 200 people able to sustain 100 sales a day.

Today there is probably at least 500 places to send traffic to.
Today there is probably only 100 people able to sustain 100 sales a day

Very good assesment. One thing I wonder though is if the 100 sales a day number for people isn't a bit high.

I know a few mailers that can do those numbers.

However none of them , to my knowledge are hitting adult.


But even TE if you are right the theory is strengthened.

Serge told me years ago...

"You can send traffic , do not waste your time with paysites , send traffic , sleep good , let someone else have the headaches."

Still sound advise.

Whilst everyone else is worrying about designing nice paysites , processing , and shooting content , I think I'll continue to concentrate on the single most valuable commodity in the business.

I would say maybe a tad low for 98 - That's when people with real money started stepping into the business (end of the year)... I would guess probably about dead on right now. BUT :

I'm currently working through a list of over 4 thousand paysites for one client who does have traffic.

And every house already has a computer now. Back in the late 90's was when the prices frist started being low enough where even the trailer park residents were getting their first computer, loading up the free AOL disk and typing in "porn" for their very first search.

These days computer sales are replacements. They've already filled up several gigs with porn.

i read recently that the number of american households with computers is still around 28%.

there's still alot of poor folk starting to get computers. you can get an emachines with a monitor for like 300 bucks. alot more black surfers around now too, i've been pushing ebony sites/interracial sites alot harder.

I thought the biggest difference is
I could relate to the Ramones singing "It's the end of the Century"

Well that and I was 7 years younger, fuck I wasn't in my 40's

Not sure if there are actually 100 companies/people who now can push 100 sales to porn on a daily basis

Other places are more profitable



Edited to add- other differences include -information flowed much more freely on boards (Oprano is a huge exception), a successful piss could launch a million dollar business, billing models were a little different and more lenient (which may effect why there are so few 100 join a day whales now), the internet was still considered novel by many, the average surfer hadn't been educated or spoiled by free (which may also effect why there are so few 100 join a day whales now), mainstream was behind adult in terms of traffic, money and tech and TGP really didn't exist

Actually I could go on for a while but you get the picture

For example , a friend of mine who is a major mailer hit me up yesterday and said.

The internet is so vast and large, you could never know how many people are out there. In the TGP realm, there are guys with millions of hits under their belts, who only use FHGs. I know there sites, but I have never even talked to them, don't even know how I'd get in touch thats how low key they are. Also, these guys aren't on the boards, they're busy working hard, 12-13 hours a day, and if they are, they usually don't let people know what sites they run, as it breeds a lot of messages, emails, etc.

Have you ever heard of this site: 89.com - just one example. Go check their Alexa rating.

Add in guys who still mail, SE guys, the TGP guys, warez guys, and who knows whatever else people are doing for traffic.

One thing about 98 and now, there were less people in adult, but today there are more buyers of porn on the net and more users, and the growth will continue. The pie is getting cut into smaller pieces, but the size of the pie overall is growing (I have absolutely no valid statistical data to prove this, just my opinion).

Being a program owner and having clandestinely worked with a fairly large program I've seen the inside numbers

Right now as a program owner you're sucking anyone's dick who can send 100 Solid joins per day on a regular basis. Fuck, you're sending them whatever they want (within reason)

Not sure that many TGP guys can do it.
If they could why would they sell gallery listings when sending 100 joins per day grosses almost 1.3M per year with less work?

Is it more profitable selling gallery spots? Got to think TGP owners are making more money selling listings than memberships, that's why the prevalent business model is selling the listings as opposed to listing sponsor galleries, free hosted or not

When someone makes 1.3M per year they tend to become visible

I've been wrong before and will be again but that's my take on it

Plus if you can move that kind of converting traffic there are bigger, more profitable, less risky pastures

Was going to tell this story yesterday but didn't. It's true, I heard it with my own ears and saw the set up and the models.
At a convention years back a somewhat well known person (in the adult internet industry) was pimping out models. You could fuck one of them for .....

.... 20,000 hits

I did the quick math and if it wasn't Chinese hitbot traffic at the time clicks were worth about .05 so in actuality to fuck one of these models wasn't any kind of deal

and the pimp is still in the business as far as I know and it wasn't KB

In 1998 I got a hell of a lot more money for my American dollar, I can tell you that much. I just love that I lost about 20% of my income solely due to the changing exchange rate.

If you have someone in your program sending let's say 30-50 joins a day you're going to try to get more of their traffic without offending them

When you have those traffic whales you know who they are and where it's coming from

There are so many programs now that someone doing 100 joins a day could be only sent 5 -10 joins per program a day, thus remaining under the radar a little better...
