NEWS America Online and XM Satellite Radio announced on Monday that they will team up to create a new online radio service. The service will be co-branded by both companies and will offer both a free version and a premier version. Current AOL subscribers will receive the premium version of the radio service for free, while non-subscribers will have access for a monthly fee. The free version of the new service will consist of a sampling of 20 XM radio stations, plus 130 AOL Radio stations. The premium version will consist of 70 XM Radio stations in addition to the 130 AOL Radio stations offered. XM Satellite Radio customers will also benefit from this new partnership. Current online radio channels hosted by AOL, which include Radio KOL, AOL Music Sessions, and AOL Music LIVE!, will be incorporated into XM's channel listings. The new offerings are slated for introduction this summer. Read more from the joint press release. BRIAN'S OPINION This sounds like a good partnership. Customers of both companies are getting something out of the deal for free, and free is a good thing. In my former life as an AOL subscriber one of the things I used the most was AOL's online radio service. It's nice to hear that as an XM subscriber I will be able to have access to some of the more popular radio stations. Radio KOL also means a third radio station for kids on the XM Satellite Radio service, which is good news for parents. Both companies are in the subscription business and would benefit greatly from the ability to entice more customers to their services through improved access to each customer base. SIRIUS did a similar deal with Dish Network last year where DISH carries SIRIUS channels with its programming and also markets a DISH Network-branded satellite radio via its vendors. USER COMMENTS 4 comment(s) XM+AOL= popup commercials! (10:09am EST Tue Apr 12 2005) nice try AOL. - by unhappy Hmmmm (10:09am EST Tue Apr 12 2005) Now if they'd broadcast the AOL stations over the XM system, then maybe I'd have the Industrial/EBM/Synth stations on XM. They'd get another subscriber, as it stands, XM is 100+ channels of crap I don't listen to. - by Angry Rivethead Stupid... (10:45am EST Tue Apr 12 2005) Yeah, great idea - pay for music when you can d/l any mp3's you want for nuttin - by billy jim bob What I'd rather see... (11:05am EST Tue Apr 12 2005) Satellite internet, PC in car stereo deck form factor. Just think satellite radio would be replaced by the multitude of internet radio stations, funky uncustomizeable stock in dash GPS nav systems would go bye bye, constantly updated maps for GPS, solid mobile email...all the MP3s one could ever want...IMs, AND the ability to catch up on some workstuff while I95 is a parkinglot. Can anyone answer me why no one has done such a thing yet? It could eb done for cheaper than a "premium" aftermarket deck. I can't see this costing any more than maybe $2500 which is what they want for stock navigation systems these days in cars. Another reason I am angry. - by Angry Rivethead Can oprano radio compete
