Over this "War" (I am too old and not American , so for me it is very hypothetical) if I was of age I wouild head to Canada.
If I had children of military age , I would either find a loophole or send them to Canada. Them Iraqi's ain't done nothing to me. They weren't involved with 9/11 They had no weapons of mass destruction. So why are we there , instead of North Korea? I would truely believe that there is an agenda we are not aware of , that we are being misinformed possibly intentionally , and I would fear the belief that runs strong in the US that "Hey ,Bush is our President we must support him" |

If I were 17 again, I would probably sign up myself.
But knowing what I know now, I would avoid it at all costs.

Canada has already said they won't harbor draft dodgers, so you'd have to go elsewhere
But there won't be a draft so it's like asking me "If you grew 10 feet tomorrow, which basketball team would you sign up for?". :P |

If there was a draft like it was structured the last couple of years it existed here in the states - based on birthdate alone - an awful lot of your typical Bush middle-class WASP Republicans would become anti-war in a heartbeat, if it looked like their Johnny (or Janey) might have to get a gun.
If it was structured the way it was during most of the years following WWII, it would cause concern among young people, but not nearly as much as if it was equitable. Two problems that a draft presents/won't solve: 1) If there really is a genuine turn-around in the economy - in other words, if it ever generates decent paying jobs - recruiting will suffer, but not nearly as much as retention will. This is not a problem that can be dealt with via a draft. 2) The services today are set up for folks who WANT to be there. Draftees (and pseudo-draftees that join a service to avoid being drafted into the Army) present a number of problems that the all-volunteer forces don't have the time and resources to deal with. Oh, and for the record - during the Vietnam War, only pussies went to Canada. The folks with the guts and integrity of their convictions went to jail.

like my dad he had a choice: jail or the army... sometimes, I wonder if he wishes he had chosen jail ;-)

There will be no draft....
The ignorance around this issue is amazing. I expect it from the MTV "Vote or Die" crowd.... but figured people on Oprano could see through it! |

If I were of eligible age I'd do what my father did during Nam. I'd go sign up for the Air Force before they drafted me knowing full well I wouldn't end up on the ground with a rifle in my hand.

Never
Again Volunteer Yourself P.S. Nick - you left off "I am so old that they couldn't use me anymore" as a poll option. My dad had the choice between going to court over some petty shit or joining the service - he joined the Coast Guard in early 1940, and was hunting submarines more than a year before Pearl Harbor. My uncle said fuck 'em and waited to be drafted. When he did and reported to the processing center, some guy came in and called out the 10 biggest guys in the line and informed them they had volunteered for the Marine Corps. Mike ... if we plan on having a military large enough to do all the things you want them to do (take on Syria and Iran, for example, while still nation-building in Iraq and Afghanistan) - then there may come a time when conscription of some form or another is necessary. This shit in Iraq drags on too long and the economy heats up, they'll have to do something. Never say never. I, for one, would love to see mandatory national service of some kind for EVERYONE between 18-20. I would love to see Grogan, for example, offered the alternative of two years active duty (four years reserve service) or two years tutoring in an inner city school.

and national service doesn't have to necessarily be armed services either bridges need painting, roadsides need to be cleaned up, etc. stuff that our tax dollars pay for anyways....
