Meni do you think the world would be better if Saddam and his sons were still running Iraq? Bring back the rape squads, torture chambers, mass graves....

Meni, that's old news. It's still disturbing, but it's been reported for some time.

So in this thread it's about the Iraqi people, Mikey?

Do you really think that the average Iraqi you seem so glad to liberate from the oppressive (and oil-rich) Saddam regime feels so relieved at not being worried about being swept up by Saddam's secret police that they are willing to accept the anarchy that comes along with the "occupation-lite" that an essentially unilateral operation requires?

Is it better for the Iraqi people to no longer fear the government but be afraid to leave their homes after dark?

I don't think the world is one damned bit safer now that Saddam has gone. From the looks of things, Iraq is not one damned bit safer now that Saddam has gone.

I guess you did not see the ABC/BBC poll released then? A majority of Iraqis think they are better off now then a year ago. A HUGE 72%+ majority say things will be even better in the future.

But honestly I don't give a shit what they think.... I am happy we have a great base for our troops in a bad neighborhood.

I think the focus of this thread is getting off target. The REAL issue is Rumsfeld and Bush were STUPID enough to actually not care about really going after Al Qaeda but instead were more interested in making a big show of things and had to be talked out of it.

Do you think all the American children who now have no fathers would be better off if Saddam was still allowed to have his rape squads, torture chambers, and mass graves?

Why don't you just come right and say "fuck the Iraqis?" A little honesty never hurt anybody, bud. EMBRACE your imperialism ...

Besides ... whether the world or Iraq would be better or worse off if Saddam had remained in power is totally irrelevant to a discussion about what the focus on Iraq in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks signifies.

Mike, what a dumb fuck argument. Where was the US when much, much worse was happening in Cambodia? Arguably the worst genocide in history. I think you were dropping death from above from B-52's. I didn't see a rush to judgement nor did I see Pol Pot rotting in an American gaol. Everyone knew that as soon as W won the election he was looking for an excuse to invade Iraq because his father failed so badly. Unfortunately, W has fucked it up even more than his daddy. It is plain as day. If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck. Its a duck.

I say those average iraqies were quite happy to catch the mothefucker....but...I know, PD, we shouldn't beleive our own eyes.

Here you go Mikey. I am sure you will be more than happy to launch a campaign to get American troops into Africa since you seem to think that was a good reason to invade Iraq.

I did and it only confirms what I posted:

http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~grempel/course...14romefell.html

There was the cost of repairing and maintaining the temples, public baths, and the like. There were also heavy expenditures for civic sacrifices, religious processions, feasts and for the games necessary to amuse the proletariat. The wealthy citizens of the municipalities who were, in effect, the middle-class, began to grow weary of the load: especially since the constantly rising taxation rates were shearing them closer and closer.

All these expenditures had to be recovered from the taxpayer. To compound the difficulties, there was an adverse balance of trade. Roman currency, for example, poured into India and the East to pay for luxuries. Even in the time of Nero, Seneca estimated that it cost Rome five million dollars a year to import its luxuries from the East. In a word, though seemingly prosperous, in the second century AD the Roman empire was overspending to such an extent that it was moving to an economic crisis. When in 167 AD Marcus Aurelius was faced by the attack of the Germanic Marcomanni and Quadi, he was forced to sell, is it were, the crown jewels as well as the household furnishing of his palace to finance the war.

A sense of futility seemed to permeate society. There were many outstanding administrators and good governors but, on the whole, the Roman spirit which had conquered the world seemed to have dissolved into an indolence which preferred ease and comfort to a facing up to the dangers which threatened civilization.

and Bush does the right thing not to follow the steps of Romans, which led them to their demise:

Bush:
1) LOWERS TAXES
and
2) Doesn't ignore the threats to civilization

Woooow, way to prove that the people got depressed during the empires decline.

What were you trying to prove again?

Quote:

Your article claims they partied during the decline, not that it caused the decline of the Roman empire. I suggest you read the whole article and not just google snippets.

You quoted an article that proved you wrong and then you dance around about it?

I wont even go Peaches on you and nitpick dates, but suffice to say you are wrong. But what is new?

It ain't easy.
"To add to his troubles a plague, brought back from the East, was ravaging the empire. By 180 AD at least one-fourth of the population of the whole empire, both civilian and military, had perished."
Debauchery was just one of the causes. I still rest my case because you haven't made yours. Once again.

Serge, you gotta read the articles you quote. Bush is stretching the limits of the American empire. Raising a local army in Iraq. Like the Romans, Bush cannot afford the empire. Cutting taxes will do nothing because he is just creating a trickle up economy that will cure nothing. If you lived in the Soviet Union you should already realise this. Damn you are easy.

re-read this, momorize this, analyze this.

I know, I know, asking you to analyze anything that early in the mrning before you got your drugs fix is mission impossible but...

I don't have to momorize anything. I read the article. You need to re read it. I don't like to debate with the ill informed. Have you been drinking this early Serge? I know it is an eastern european custom, but cheap vodka makes for lousy posting. Maybe you should recover before you embarrass yourself again.

I have forgotten more about shrooms than you will ever know. Serge you constantly amaze me with your ignorance of anything important. Apart from making money, you aren't much use at all, really. Now I know you can afford rehab, but AA is free and I hear it works.

Saddam only buddied the UN and the world for 12 yrs after the war. Plus after njumerous santions. After all the BS Saddam has done, as mentioned above, rape squads, killing his own people and etc. You don't think, enough was enough?

It was a matter of time before Saddam either let the Al Quada or God only knows, happen or let in.

Only way to get rid of the Tyrant, was to go to war with him.
If anything, Iraq is a better place without him.

Sure things will be rough for his people, for a while.
Life is never easy after war.

But, at least, his people have a right to choose their future, even more...than they ever did before.

The world is full of freekin tyrants and tin pot dictators. Will America be invading them as well?
How about Saudi Arabia as the first step. Force them to have elections and become a democracy. Ain't gonna happen.

Oh yeah, and Saudis funded and nurtured Al Quaeda and probably are more of a threat than Iraq ever was.

PD, just to clarify...

If Kerry is elected, he should pull our troops out and put Saddam and his cronies back in power?

It's Serge's board
he can do with it what he wants
if he gets his ass handed to him in a discussion
he can change the subject
he can insult you
he can complement you
he can bend over and take it
he can walk away
