People who suggest that they support our troops but not the war they're fighting are intellectually dishonest. Is there any other profession where you can support the people but not their goals?
"I support the carpenters, but I don't want them to build that house." "I support the Broncos, but I want the Steelers to win." "I support the firefighters, but I don't want them to put out that fire." And so on... So, if you oppose the war, especially at this point, please don't say you support out troops, because you don't, even if you can't admit it. Resisting the urge to spit on our troops isn't supporting them. In conclusion: Let's Roll!

During the last gulf war, the President wasn't sure if he could deploy me to Saudi Arabia, since the Geneva Convention clearly has me listed as a weapon of mass destruction. And boy did that turn out to be true when I got over there.

I see no conflict whatsoever in opposing the way this was done, and the reasoning behind it, while still hoping and praying that the military personnel carrying out their orders will come home quickly and ALIVE. My argument is not with the people in the line of fire, it's with the ones who are safely ensconced several thousand miles away whose reasons and justification remain suspect in my own mind. And I'm not altogether sure I'm a "Liberal" as most people seem to define it. Unless of course that definition is, "someone who doesn't agree with Buff." Last edited by Rox at Mar 20 2003, 08:10 AM |

I happen to support the war - I think Saddam was as likely to disarm peacefully as Hitler was to sit and spin on Neville Chamberlain's umbrella. That doesn't mean I'm pleased that the current Administration failed in the foreign policy objective of getting the world on board. The simple fact is there are just as many morons who support the war as there are who oppose it.

PD you make a good point - The Criticism that Bush sees the world in Black and White - good and bad is a valid one. I think he may not see the multi layered complex world like Clinton did, but sometimes a black and white vision helps. IN THE CASE against Saddam and terrorism I think it is a GOOD SOLID CLEAR VISION that is going to help the United States win the war on terrorism in the long term.
Its easy to debate the complexities of the world and get so caught up in the nuances that one is paralyzed to act. ( Something I think Clinton had a problem with) Sometimes its difficult situations where black/white cannot be applied. But when it comes to OUR National Security, and evil dictators like Saddam - Black and White - Good/Evil is effective! |

I have managed to stay out of most discussions about the war, but this one was very difficult to keep my mouth shut. Rox beat me to this one...I would have loved to be the first one to call bullshit on Buff's line of reasoning...if you can call it that.
I believe that I do support this war. At least I am willing to trust the fact that our leaders are doing what is best for our country. I also believe that there are people out there who disagree with it for whatever reason. Those reason's are their own. That does NOT exclude them from supporting our troops if they so choose. I think Buff's analogies were horrible and made no sense whatsoever. Shit, now I don't even know why I bothered responding to this tripe. I guess I wanted to express my disgust with the idea that someone can't support our men and women going to war, but not supporting the war itself...total horse shit. My two cents...now come and get your change

i was going to say as well, that supporting the troops and opposing the war are two different things entirely. the troops did not initiate the war. they they did not decide themselves to go outside of the authority of the UN, against the will of the international community, or had the gall to defy France.
they are just there to fight and have no say in that. why would someone not wish them well even if they oppose the war?

Saddam's gotta go, that's for sure. We should have taken him out long ago. Maybe it's just our foreign policy and the way we're represented that sticks in my craw. Part of the problem, for me, is that I don't believe we'll ever understand, or "fix" the problems in the Middle East by what amounts to telling them over and over again, "Do it our way; our way's better." The Arabs are still basicly warring tribes whose government is inextricably entangled with their religion. I just see us insulting them and their way of life every time we stick our nose in, that's all. |
