If you are going to Vegas give yourself a lot of extra time at the airport. ALL baggage must now be screened and from what I've been reading the equipment isn't that reliable. If you lock your checked baggage and it gives a positive signal they are going to break the lock and do a hand search. Simple things such as high heeled shoes can give a false positive. The bottom line is that if you want your bags to make it to your plane on-time, you better get there early.
Happy flying!! |

While getting my tags renewed, I ended up talking with a guy who works with the Homeland Security Force and just spent the last 15 weeks going across the country training airport workers.
He said everyone will be subject to one of three different searches of their checked luggage: 1) checking from the outside for explosives (I'm assuming Xray?) 2) Opening it and lightly rummaging around to check 3) Opening it, and removing items to check. He said any item such as hairspray (I know Serge carries a lot this with him when he travels!), shampoo, etc. over 12 oz will be taken out and tested separately if the 3rd type of search is performed. He said to put toiletry items in clear plastic bags so they can glance at them and to pack small sizes. He also said that since your bag can be unlocked, to make sure to carry all medicines, electronics, etc. via carry on as most major airports do have theft problems and they take what's easy to sell for cash. My Mom is flying twice in the next few days, so I'll see how bad it is from her. She brought a frozen turkey and ham in her luggage over the holidays and they x-rayed them separately

You two are safe from Mom's turkey and ham, but that's about it
The whole airport security problem is a knee jerk reaction, and I'm surprised it's gone this long. If you don't have machines that can accurately detect explosives, then why are they bought? And ANYTHING can be used a weapon Though I'm a little curious why Ulfie's concerned about high heels possibly causing a false positive.......

I seen a movie where they knock everyone out prior to take off then
have this drug to bring you back around when you land, maybe thats a better option. :-) |

i think its a good idea and it makes me feel much more comfortable.
its certainly more reasonable than searching down 80 year old women because they were chosen at random out of fear of security being accused of racism or racial profiling.... thats the pinnacle of ignorance. personally i am not looking forward to the moment when i am clutching my wife in terror and free falling for 35,000 feet, having just enough time to brag about how fast we boarded the plane... right before our half frozen bodies blast a 10 foot deep crator into some parking lot somewhere.

I would be all for it if it offered "real" security but this does nothing but make people "feel" safe. The machines do not work very well, issue lot's of false positives, and don't scan for some types of bombs at all. Bottom line is it's a waste of time and money and it doesn't make me feel any safer at all.
Oh, and Peaches, apparently my years of being a drag queen are catching up with me. :P |

I have been very disappointed with air security since 9/11. I've flown many times and nothing seemed any different than before - except for a few months after 9/11.
False negatives mean explosives are getting through. Fales positives mean I should leave home earlier for my flight. If what you are saying is true - that the equipment is giving many false positives, well that IS success to me. That makes me feel somewhat safer. Anything we can eliminate as a weapon on a plane increases safety. Last edited by Colin at Jan 1 2003, 02:27 PM
