It is commonly said that Gordon Moore said computing power would double every 18 months. He never said that. What he actually said is that the number of transistors on a chip would double every year. In 1975, he changed that to every two years. David House was the one who stated that this would cause a doubling of performance every 18 months.

Moore's Law gets applied to lots of techie things. It used to be applied to modem technology as well. It's actually held up over the years even as we've gone broadband.

We went from 300 bps in the late 70's up to 56K, or even 230K if you wanna include compression by the late 90's.

We've continued to progress with broadband. Most of us were happy to get cable or DSL with 1.5 MB, then we got a bump to 3MB from many providers a couple of years ago. And now Comcast and others are bumping to 4MB this year.

Ubiquitous 11MB wireless everywhere stands a good chance of being reality by the end of the decade.

just fucking with you colin, but moore's law is not a law in practice, it is a postulate, the went to a theorum, but has too many flaws to be a law. in todays scientific society, this is commonplace. not everything can be a law.
