A Dark Day Revisited
Five years later, Hollywood is betting that America is ready for films about what happened on 9/11. Are we?

By Sean Smith and Jac Chebatoris
Newsweek
April 10, 2006 issue - If movie trailers are supposed to cause a reaction, the preview for "United 93" more than succeeds. Featuring no voice-over and no famous actors, it begins with images of a beautiful morning and passengers boarding an airplane. It takes you a minute to realize what the movie's even about. That's when a plane hits the World Trade Center. The effect is visceral. When the trailer played before "Inside Man" last week at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, audience members began calling out, "Too soon!" In New York City, where 9/11 remains an open wound, the response was even more dramatic. The AMC Loews theater on Manhattan's Upper West Side took the rare step of pulling the trailer from its screens after several complaints. "One lady was crying," says one of the theater's managers, Kevin Adjodha. "She was saying we shouldn't have [played the trailer]. That this was wrong ... I don't think people are ready for this."

We're about to find out. "United 93" is the first feature film to deal explicitly with the events of September 11, 2001, and is certain to ignite an emotional debate before and after it opens on April 28. Is it too soon? Should the film have been made at all? More to the point, will anyone want to see it? Other 9/11 projects are on the way as the fifth anniversary of the attacks approaches, most notably Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center," starring Nicolas Cage, opening Aug. 9. But as the harbinger, "United 93" will take most of the heat, whether it deserves it or not.

The real United 93 crashed in a Pennsylvania field after 40 passengers and crew fought back against the terrorists who had hijacked the plane. Writer-director Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Supremacy") has gone to great lengths to be respectful in his depiction of what occurred, proceeding with the film only after securing the approval of every victim's family. "Was I surprised at the unanimity? Yes. Very. Usually there are one or two families who are more reluctant," Greengrass writes in an e-mail. "I was surprised and humbled at the extraordinary way the United 93 families have welcomed us into their lives and shared their experiences with us." His team's research was meticulous. "They even went so far as to ask what my mother had been wearing on the plane," says Carole O'Hare, whose 79-year-old mother, Hilda Marcin, died on the flight. "They were very open and honest with us, and they made us a part of this whole project." Universal, which is releasing the film, plans to donate 10 percent of its opening weekend gross to the Flight 93 National Memorial Fund. That hasn't stopped criticism that the studio is exploiting a national tragedy. O'Hare thinks that's unfair. "This story has to be told to honor the passengers and crew for what they did," she says. "But more than that, it raises awareness. Our ports aren't secure. Our borders aren't secure. Our airlines still aren't secure, and this is what happens when you're not secure. That's the message I want people to hear."
==================================================

Damn, far too many poeople in this country have no intestinal fortitude and have to constantly whine about something and it never stops. I read this piece and it just REALLY got under my skin with people whining about this trailer and the movie itself. Grow some balls. NOT A SINGLE ONE of the families involved objected to the making of this film. You don't want to see it, fine, but don't sit there and try and tell the theater that you don't want ME to see it because you are a whiny boob who can't handle it. I plan to go see this movie when it opens and I hope others do as well. People could learn a lesson in intestinal fortitude from the people who died on that plane and the families who continue to deal with the real pain of a lost loved one and said to move forward with the project and helped the producer and director be as accurate as possible. There are a couple more paragraphs to the article if you are interested.

I have no desire to see this movie at this time. I understand why people would be emotional about this. The families have been dealing with the loss since the day it happened.. and every day since then. The rest of the population has moved on and it hasn't been in their daily thoughts. I don't think the general population has finished dealing with this. Those closest to the situation have been forced to deal with the loss in order to continue their lives. The rest of us had the luxury of dealing with it later.

As far as the right to complain about the trailers.. They paid for the ticket to the movie thus they paid for the right to complain. Trailers are nothing more than commercials. They already paid for the services of the theater and then being subjected to a commercial they find offensive? They had every right to bitch.

Of course they have every right to bitch about it. Perhaps I reacted a tad harshly. That said, it doesn't mean I agree with them doing so. Especially given the fact that according to the article that all of the families who were personally involved in flight 93 on 9-11 signed off on the film. Those are the people that were personally affected by that flight's tragic circumstances and they all gave their ok to go ahead and by every measure the filmmakers went to great lengths to be as accurate as possible. The biggest part that bugs me is that if there is anyone who should find offense in any way to this film it should be those people with their direct suffering. To see other people try and equate their pain over 9-11 with the familily survivors irks me a wee bit. People can certianly choose not to see it, but when the people directly affected by the events surrounding the film don't have objections, and then I see others trying to tell the rest of us it's too soon it just rings hollow because I can't eqaate their sense of loss to someone who actually lost someone on that flight.

I think everyone has a right to feel the way they will. I hear where your coming from when your talking about comparing grief. The people that are directly effected should have the greatest say so. At the same time the population as a whole also has a voice. Just because the families are fine with it doesn't mean the population is ready to accept it. The box office will tell all of us how much people are really bothered by it or if there are just some really loud complainers.

I think every year on 9-11 all news channels should show the planes crashing into building, and the results that followed.

They have not done this IN YEARS!!! The TV networks say they do not want to keep traumatizing the population - but that is BULLSHIT! They do not want to get the American people angry, and focused on who the real enemy is.

The main stream media would rather keep blasting Bush.

You would think that Bush is the enemy, rather then muslim fascists murderers.

We are a Nation of pussys who is manipulated like puppets!

I believe it is the president that lost focus (rather quickly) on who the real enemy is - Iraq didn't cause 9-11 - Al Quada did. We got Hussain - Where's Bin Ladden ?

I most likely would not see the movie, as I do not have the intestinal fortitude to watch people die in such a way.

I will say that the memory is permanently etched.....and I don't need to see the planes crashing into the Towers every year to remember and realise who the criminals were....

Others may need reminders....and still, others will never get it.

I will never understand why there are people out there who think they have the right to decide what others watch.....

It's pretty simple. If you don't want to see the movie, don't go. If you don't want to watch the show, turn off the television. Don't buy newspapers....but, never ever tell me what I can read or watch...and what I can't or shouldn't see or learn. That's MY choice; and, if I remember correctly, I chewed through the umbilical cord years ago. I don't need parents anymore.
