Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance Sat February 1, 2003 03:24 PM ET BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that it was God's retribution. "We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said. "God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said. Iraqis are braced for a possible U.S.-led war to rid their country of any chemical, biological or nuclear weapons it may possess. Iraq denies it has such weapons. Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up over the southwestern United States 16 minutes before its scheduled landing. The 48-year-old Israeli astronaut was a fighter pilot in the Israeli air force. He was the youngest pilot in a team that bombed Iraq's nuclear reactor in 1981. Israel said the reactor was intended to develop nuclear weapons. "Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason, now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said. There were no such signs of jubilation over the shuttle disaster in any of the Palestinian territories. The official response from the Palestinians was one of condolence. "President (Yasser) Arafat and the Palestinian Authority offer their condolences to the six American families and the Israeli family who lost their loved ones in the catastrophe," Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official and spokesman, told Reuters. Erekat said Arafat had sent President Bush a message of condolences over the loss of the NASA space agency's shuttle. The United States, Israel's closest ally, is the chief Middle East peace broker. |

i read that earlier today, they are such simple people it's pathetic, it's like we're engaged in a war with cartoon characters. Just blow them up, if not for the fact there's oil in their lands these people would all be living in tents. The rest of the world should shut the fuck up, getting rid of these people is a major step forward for civilization.

'God Will Not Be Mocked' The comments came as Falwell was appearing as a guest on Robertson's daily 700 Club program. Both expressed their sorrow and outrage over the attacks and advocated a strong response to the terror. Then Falwell elaborated on who, in addition to the terrorists who perpetrated the attacks, was responsible for them. God, he told Robertson, had protected America "wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. "Throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools," he said. "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. "[T]he pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way — all of them who have tried to secularize America," Falwell continued, "I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" What excuse do our own brand of nuts have for such superstitious bullshit? At least the fundamentalist Muslims can blame their simplemindedness on the fact that they're not exposed to education, progress and technology. Falwell and Robertson had the benefit of growing up in a country where those things are freely accessible to everyone who wishes to take advantage of them -- and yet they cling to superstition. So who's more simple, then? |

Rox ... you're clouding the issue with relevant facts. Didn't you know that the likes of Falwell and Robertson have no more sway over the Bush Administration than the Wiccans do over the Democrats?
I read it on Oprano ... it must be true.

Pd and Alex,
If that's the best you can do... I repeat...I am an agnostic; and I'm still trying to figure out why Socialists, Democrats, and Atheists fear a name which they all basically deny exists. Do you know something no one else knows that makes you afraid? Be not afraid (or as Sean says, "Let not your heart be troubled."). I will prove to you that I am not afraid... God Jehovah Jesus Christ There! I have posted (said) the names you fear so much. Watch for further posts from me to prove that I still exist. And remember, because I can say or post those names DOES NOT mean that I either acknowledge or deny their existence, validity, or alleged power... Last edited by Torone at Feb 3 2003, 07:38 AM

Remember, fuck is just a word, and can be used to describe the very best to the very worst! (let's fuck, or fuck you!). God brings in a set of values, a set of moral judgements, that are not those of all the participants in the situation. "one nation under god" suggests that the whole nation agrees on one god. Not likely (someone reported this week over 2600 different religions in the US). The moral implications of the use of God by a christian President sets a moral standard that is higher than some people want to live by, which is often exactly against the US constitution and court rulings. Abortion being one of the most obvious examples. Most importantly, it puts the president in a situation of deciding who the winning team is religeously. In his faith based initiatives, how many dollars go to christians, but won't go to islamic people, or athiests? Would a person get better services if they lied and claimed to be christian? Church and state are two ends of a stick, bending them together will certainly break the stick. Alex

I beleive in God. I consider myself a Christian, I was raised Episcipol, and of course my mms side of the family is Jewish.
The problem with religion is that people use it to try and control other people. Religion in itself is not bad, beleive in a higher power is probably a good thing. The real issue is that HUMAN's are corrupt, and once you start orginizing people under the banner or orginized religion, or governemnts, or whatever there will be abuse, backstabbing, and other forms of corruption - because HUMAN BEINGS are flawed, especially when you throw in power and money.... and Orginized religion has ALWAY been about power and money. So do not blame God, or those who beleive in Him.... blame the flawed human beings who try to use religion to control other people, trying to gain power, wealth, or other worldly outcomes. |

Praise your god as you like, just don't invoke him (or her) for the sake of power. Alex
