Jesse,

According to the specialists on the news channels. Not stating my opinion, just what they have said.

They have said that those engines were designed to breakaway during a catastophic event, or major problems. If the engine shutdown quickly or ceased it could cause it to rip off the wing.

Interesting story in the Vegas Airport yesterday: There are now huge lines to get through security. close to the end of the line, about 5 people in front of me, a lady started yelling for security. It seems a man hopped into the line just a few feet previously instead of in the back and when questioned by some other men, said he was with the lady in front. I'm a bad judge of nationalities (being Irish, English, Dutch, German, etc. - a mutt - myself ;)), but he did have characteristics of Arab nationals. The lady said she had never seen him before and demanded to know what he was doing there, why he said he was with her, and then she started calling for security. He didn't seem to have a ticket - just a piece of paper in his hand. Security never showed up, he left immediately and the security people at the scanners refused to listen to any of us. Incredible.

I flew out of Newark yesterday and the security there seemed fairly lax.
When I checked in the lady rushed thru and forgot one of the security questions "has anyone asked you to carry anything for them".
Not sure what detection devices they have in the baggage area. When I left for Newark last week they were picking every 4th passenger in Oklahoma City to have their bags opened and inspected.
At Newark yesterday I saw maybe a dozen armed National Guard troops, but most of them were surrounded by visitors wanting to talk to them. I hardly saw any of them looking around, they seemed too distracted.
The x-ray security people I saw were about 99% foreign. One lady had to repeat what she was saying to the guy in front of me several times. I think she was telling him to take his laptop out of the bag.
I have to admit I did not feel very safe while waiting to get on my plane. They randomly checked some passengers, but it looked like maybe 5 at the most..and they were all white and half were teens.
They may be doing something, but I definately agree that it is not enough.
Anyone remember John Malkovich's character in "In the Line of Fire"? He made a plastic gun that passed right through a metal detector? I know that it can't be that hard to get around most security.
Never mind that a glass or plastic knife can go right thru a metal detector but will still kill you just as easily as a metal knife. If anyone thinks metal-detectors make things safer they are fooling themselves.
Yeah, we still have a long way to go before we can be safe..if we can ever truly be safe.

There is a "pecking order" that happens in animal societies (this applies to humans as well as we are one of those animals). You are either #1 or not. This is inexorable. In history, anyone not in the number one spot has been tortured, pillaged, killed, etc. I, for one, and glad to be number one and am willing to wipe out anyone (country) that wishes to take our spot.

As far as this individual incident, engines don’t just come off big planes. These planes have rigorous maintenance checks. BOMB!

to me i have said since Day 1, what was the point of taking on Afghanistan? To find ONE man who they tell us might be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
And u know if we ever get within a hundred miles of him he will kill himself, he said so.

And he said his death means nothing, there are thousands who will continue the jihad.

______________

Are there any "ordinary" people in Afganistan?

The people of Afganistan are responsible for the gov't they have, they are responsible for hiding Bin Laden, and Al Quada.

Nukes however exciting to use, is not the solution. If there were, we have plenty of low yeild bombs that would not put out much radiation at all.

Grimm, we are only getting sketchy details - bomb could have been in a bag.

Security is not that good yet - I have flown a lot lately, security is still a joke in some places.

They have people who flunked out of grammer school operating security at most airports.

In Dallas, I had people checking me out who barely spoke english. Most were Mexican, but a few looked Somolian ( they were black, and had thick accents.) I felt like I should be checkig them out...

Oprano hasn't stopped for this long since before friday night!
************
Yeah well get this - we pay over $2000 per month for our bog pond adsl connection - the reason it's so much is that it's spose to NEVR drop out - well guess what happened ??
they dropped out!!!
Apparently it is in QLD only .
Meanwhile I call Corvo up to see if he is connected - he's got bloody dial up for liek $30 bucks a month thru powerup and he's still connected
FUCKING TELSTRA!!!!!! >:(

Luckily for us we have this club, fitted out with a lot of computers on cable. We had to drive over here to work.

so now I am here don't worry!!!

Serge - I think you could wear me out anyday if your posting is any thing to go by! ;)
