Corvo .. yeah, there are the chemical arguments too .. like, Carbon based life is the only form possible because of carbon's peculiar bonding properties. Dunno. Maybe.
When someone succeeds at abiogenesis in a lab, i will be impressed.
I just read a paper where a researcher is attempting to create the smallest possible genome necessary for replicating life. He's not doing it from scratch though, he's removing what he thinks are "unnecessary genes".

neither of us can proof our speculations, but...
if it could happen on Earth-
it can happen in other places.

colin, thats easy.
oxygen.
once photosynthesising biological matter began to create an oxygen rich environment it was impossible for simple selfreplicating forms to develope because the chemical composition of the surrounding environment did not allow for it.
least thats what i read somewhere, unless my brain is really screwed atm.

So .. I guess I answer Kitty with I am just as inclined to believe it is not there than it is there.
I would not be surprised to find we ARE alone.
Nor would I would be surprised to find life on one of the moons of Jupiter or under the surface of Mars.
I find the second alternative to be much more exciting but this doesn't help it to be true.

I have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER if life exists elsewhere in the solar system. I do not find the conventional probability technique popularized by Mr. Sagan of combining a bunch of "low end " probabilities to show that life is very probable because of the vastness of the Universe to be a very good one. Any of the supposed factors might be a trillion times less liekly. We do not know.
I think the various Anthropic Principles can be used as a good defense that life need/might not be anywhere else in the Universe.
How much variation is possible in self-replicating organisms? Are the molecular bases of life that we witness on Earth the only possible design or just one of many?
Life apparently originated on Earth just once. The similarity of DNA/RNA-based life leads one to conclude this is most likely. If life is so probable, why did abiogenesis only occur on Earth once? (tentative)

Sure there may not be 'intelligent life on ohtre planets ' - but hey , there's not that much of it here either!!!

And unlike the red cross they are the most helpful, caring people - they give over 2 million free meals a year to starving people, eduscate and clothe people and help villages in 3rd world counties.

Buddhism as a very popular non teological religion among hindus, right?

It is said in the Vedas that whenver there is a huge rising in evil on the earth Visnu appears, or sends one of hus servants. (he actaually appeared only 500 years ago as Lord Caitanya Mahaprahbu)
anyhow Visnu has had 8 'incarnations' and one of those was Buddha.
Buddha was Visnu come to earth to stop people from wiorshipping false Gods - he did this by promoting atheism odf a sort (better to serve NO god than false ones)
and the MAIN reason he came wats to Stop peopel from senselessly killing animals for food.
Now I WISH i could do THAT!!!!!!!!!

The Bible has incest, gang rape, orgies, genocide, and infanticide.
Can the Bhagavad Gita compare with that? I want to know .. is it worthy reading for a pornographer?***********
Every person should read Bhagavad Gita.
It has all thate bible does and more (although it is the main part of the Vedas ( the Vedas have never been completely translated into English as there are over 17 000 volumes)
The Gita is set on the battle field or Kurikshetra - where Arjuna (Krna's cousin) has t go to war agianst his whoe family.
HE doesn't know what to do - should he kill his family and live or jsut give in and die?
In his despeartion he asks Krsna - who proceeds to tell him the Gita - so that Arjuna can make a fully informed decision.
If you are afetr a lot of sex/violence etc - it would be better for you to read the Vedas,
Krsan at one stage had 16 000 wives - all of whom he could be with at the same time in their seperate 16 000 palaces - becasue he is everwhere!

Colin,
unless you would like to sit here and listen to me ramble on about the intricacies of hinduism, it is probably easier for me to just say that my mother is what can loosely be termed a 'Hindu' (although technically she is not she is a Vaisnava- but it's all pretty much the same thing)
so I was bought up with it - but on the other hhand My Dad is a jehovah's witness - a very bad combination.
I was born in Tassie
and I don't thinkI am thr first hindu webmaster/mistress as I know quite a number of Brittish Indian webmasters, and as I pointed out earlie I am technically not actually a hindu.
For anyone who doesn't know - Hinduism is not a religion it is a culture.
You cannot 'become a Hindu' you must be born into it - it's like you cannot be born in Australian and suddenly decide you are a Greek.
'Hindu' is actually a name created by the Ayrians who moved to India, where they happened upon villages situated on the Indus river and hence they called these people Hindus. In India, peopel do not refer to themselves as himdu as it has no true meanign for them as a people.
Rather they refer to themselves according to their caste(this is becoming rarer, as the caste system was outlawed by the British during their occupation of India - although while in theory it no longer exists - by all social standards it still does) or according to their line of Disciplic succession. (in layman's terms - the group of people led by their Families' guru)
As I said I coul dgo on all night about this - but I hope I explained it for you and didn't bore you to tears
Corvo, oh, ya mean like, when a chimp stares off in the distance pretending not to notice the youngster nearby yelling and screaming attemptin' to overthrow the chimpanzee government?
