Dig, here is a Soviet Army doctrine
( and I know it, because I went thru military training in College and would have been Leutenant if I haven't emigrated,
SAM missle stations was my specialty,
and I was fully debriefed 22 years ago by CIA station in Rome,
don't look at me, I carry no secrets
;-))
so,
the doctrine is:
get them young, get them early,
brain wash them well,
brainwash them to the state of mind when one is acting like a robot and
will sacrifice itself with no questions asked for ANY purpose the Communist Party would choose,
all in the name of the...people.

I only recommend the military to those who:
a: need the discipline
b: can survive it
I saw some guys get really fucked up in their head during basic and AIT, I'd hate to recommend to somebody that they enlist and then have them jump off a building or something LOL..
course, I hear the physical requirements aren't nearly as demanding now as they were when I was active in 86. I'm sure the head games are still the same though.

Dig,
Yeh, new some 31charlies, good mos, communications!! We had some in our battery, and they play a very important role, especially for the XO,CO,Battalion, etc. I belive they were out there as long as we were in the field. I did pretty good in the army, went in as a E-1, no college or anything, A Little over 2 years later was a E-5, not too shabby. did all my schools in germany, Pdlc,B-noc, etc. I recommned the army to alot of young 17-20 year old people, good way to grow up, have some fun, learn responsability, etc.
When I got out, I was as poor as dirt, no skills to use, bought a cheap 8086 I think, Started a 1 line adult bbs, grew to 60 lines, and the rest is history:) just alot of hard work, never used computers in the army, when I was 12, used to write and sell some Basic programs on the trs level 1 model1 and the coco, but that's it:) sextoyking

woo-hoo, a bush beater! :)
I was 31c, platoon level communications. You know, the guy with the radio on his back who always gets shot in the war movies and the LT grabs the phone away from his dead hands and shit.
Thankfully I was National Guard so I didn't have to do those stints out in the woods.. scuttlebutt had it that 31c troops were doing 6 months at a time in the field in Germany but I never went so I don't know how true that is.
Gun bunny, cock loader, whatever you want to call it;)
We had the 2nd least life expedicany in the army, 11B infranty in war has a 3-5 Second, we have a 7-9 sec:)

Actually mabey it could of been a little because I was jewish, but this DS did the same preaching to alot of soldiers, acutally got in trouble for doing it at another Battery, so they moved him to our battery. But I was just thinking, religion is cool, but not with soldiers training, especially when from a NCO, and of course in any goverment job:)

It was briefly mentioned by someone earlier - i love that film it is in my top 10 of all time.
Dig, if you haven't seen Dead presidents yet then go and rent it - it is also about the effects of the war on return servicemen - except from a black american perspective.
but it was more about the effects of the war than about the war itself..

toolz, make sure you check out 'Swimming to Cambodia' by Spaulding Grey. It's a monologue about the making of Killing Fields, and it's as interesting as the movie.

Though not exactly a Vietnam War movie another great epoch film was The Killing Fields with John Malkovich. The story of the civil war in Cambodia is probably much like what has been happening in Afghanistan over the last 20+ years.
As for true Vietnam films, definetly Apocalypse Now.
I saw that at a festival Bubba....amazing documentary...I remember Siskel and Ebert campaigning hard for an Oscar for that movie... SykkBoyput these conversions to the test

RE: Apocalypse Now
there is an awesome 1991 movie where Coppola's joy and agony are
revealed... it is a documentary by Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper
about the making of "Apocalypse Now," with personal footage and
journal entries by Coppola's wife, Eleanor, who made secret
recordings of Coppola expressing his doubts and discouragement
as the project threatened to swamp him... it is very rare and
difficult to find a copy... but worth the hunt...

The American filmakers have done such an incredible job of showing the hell that was Vietnam that it has made America shy. Nobody wants to see kids get torn to pieces. If u read what these Afghani's do to people they catch it makes you wanna vomit. They chop off enemy soldier heads, stick them on poles and parade them around the town.
Of all the Vietnam flicks which was your favorite?
this is a bit of where I get my war cynicism...I understand the importance of maintaining peace, but I've also seen and had to live with the aftereffects of the human element and I won't even get into the treatment of some of the VA hospitals...I'm not anti-war, just a war cynic ;)))

Mutt,
my dad is actually working on a book about his experiences...he's still claustrophobic to this day...they'd take the smallst guy in the platoon and send them down into these dark tunnels to flush out anyone who might be in there...they'd send them in with a flashlight,a gun and a knife and say "there ya go". Anyone he ran into, he was ordered to kill, well it being dark (a lot of those tunnels were so small it was hard to maneuver a flashlight, and often the person he killed was either a woman or child...but that person would have killed him had he not acted first...he still has various knife scars on his head and of course a psychological scar that he'll never shake 100%. He felt guilty enough as it was and then returned home to get jeered and spit upon...I rememebr watching the movie "Born On The Fourth Of July" and getting chills up my spine at his speeches, they were almost the same words my dad used in being pissed at his own country...it took him a long time to get over that... That's good that her old man is doing good. But war always has its living casualties. And they pretty much get forgotten.
Ever see the movie Roger and Me about the people of Flint Michigan. There's a scene in there of a guy who looked like he was probably a really popular kid in high school, went to Nam, and u see him and he's never been the same, then the soundtrack starts playing the Beach Boys' 'Wouldn't It Be Nice"........
really touching.

Kimmy,
Before Sykkboy's interview, the only people who would dare poke fun at me would be:
1. Nick
2. Serge
3. You
Now that everyone thinks I'm a nice guy, I'm wide open no matter what. =o)
I was quite impressed a week ago looking for more amateur content and coming upon Superpics. So impressed, I got their whole package! Well, we've had it up now fully running about 4 days. All of a sudden we started getting emails from our members about hey this isn't working!!! Get it fixed! After checking out what our mebers were talking about, we found out it was our new feeds from Superpics.com I'm not talking 1 or 2 complaints, it was quite sizeable. I talked to Edd today, we went through the sites, we were both dumbfounded what it could be. He checked with his admin, it was a simple DNS screwup that did it. In less than 15 minutes, we had it corrected, and now DNS is propagating. Meaning, happy members, better retention, I'm happy cause Nickatilynx's recurrings are on the rise.
It's been hard making the change from Circle Jerker to Paysite Operator, but with customer support from content provders like http://www.superpics.com and outstanding content, the changeover is much easier.
About a year and so ago, I would have never thought these words would escape my lips...

Serge that is why I put it plural. You can have as many shirts as you want.
You will like this, the printer messed the first batch of shirts up. Not really to bad, just a little color difference - I told him I wanted them re-done. So he made new ones the right way. ( I give this guy a lot of business, and normally his work is always top notch)
So he had all the extra shirts lying around that were not perfect - he wanted to sell them to me for like $8 a pop. I told him I have no use for them, so I ended up getting them at cost like $2.50 :-)
