MAS151 - Medical coding. The is the first actual medical coding class, I take 2 more next semester.

It seems my lack of patience is my downfall - most I missed needed 5 digits when I gave them 4. Per one of the instructors, in the real world, this is rarely an issue - insurance will pay out the same either way. BUT....this ain't the real world

a lot of teachers like to slap everyone down, and curve up. I've gone thru many classes where the class average was a 65-70. I've also been thru classes where on the final, the class average was in the 50s. its easier to do that, than to explain to someone why a 93 average isnt an A.

Woohoo! I found out one of the girls in my class made a 15 The one who is a professional student (she's involved in Workman's Comp case, and her husband died after retiring from the military so she's just taking all the classes and getting all the degrees she can before someone makes her work) made a 56.

Just took 3 finals - A on one, lucky if I get C's on the others. And I STILL haven't take the math one yet.

Yep, medical coding. I have MAS152 and 153 to take next semester, then hopefully get a job at a coding factoring a guy a few towns away has set up, then hopefully get him to invest with me in opening one up here where I live or be able to do it from home.

Or I might end up saying "screw this" and take computer programming classes

This should be simplified and readily available in medical software with drop downs and check boxes same way auto insurance adjusts a wrecked car.

I'll admit I couldn't do that one. Every bone in my body would be screaming out "this is stupid, re-engineer it" while I plodded thru it.

Last time I had the occasion to visit a hospital and watch it work and all the processes, I had the same urges. They have people stacked up in the hallway in the ER and are diverting ambulances with people very sick if not dying all because the system is broken and inefficient. I'm not talking the computers specifically but the entire system of how a patient is moved thru from check in, to diagnosis, to testing to identifying available beds. It's all just broken.

Part of that is government over complicating stuff with regulations, part of it is insurance companies not wanting to pay for stuff. But it's mostly lack of someone who understands basic system analysis being a position of power to look at the whole thing from the entrance to patient release ane making it flow smoothly.

Companies that have to try to make a profit do this kind of thing or die. In healthcare, they do not do it, so the customer dies unfortunately.

ok I'm assuming once you graduate, you'll begin working somewhere & have access to reference books for this information, So basicly they're making you memorize this codeing just for an exam? And you got a 48. from an average of most that was a 49.? with top grade being a 104 points, and considering how the rest of the class did. I think you did an great job.

Now if you had to memorize this and always retain it, without help books then I'd say maybe something different. but I see your doing just fine, "like the rest"

Nooooo - it would be impossible to memorize it. Seriously this book is 2 inches think with thin papers and teeny tiny writing. It's a TON of stuff in there. You get to use the book during the tests.

I talked to a girl about it 2 semesters ago. She said she'd always been an A student and she was making a C in the class, so I don't feel too bad.

In reality, the insurance companies and doctor offices are much more lenient than the school, but obviously the school has to grade on what's literally "correct".

Oh, no, the disks aren't available for us to use in class. And all our coding MUST be done from the book. Like I said, I guess they just figure they'll teach us the hardest way, lol.

I'd buy the disk in a nanosecond if it was allowed. Hell, there was an $80 book I had to use for another class that we could use in the library for free. But I had to go up there 5 or 6 times. It's 50 miles each way so I figured with gas and time, I'd just order the book from Amazon and do it at home

The codes are so loosely defined and overlapping, that there can in reality be multiple legitimate answers, but only one is correct according to the book and the class. Although they'll admit that insurance companies will typically accept any valid coding for the condition.

She did revise the grades and I got a 64 with the class average 61.71. I'm still not pleased. Apparently this is first time the class has been online AND in the classroom. I think they need to go back to classroom only and get a teacher, not a nurse to teach it. The nurse kept telling us what WASN'T important when it didn't matter since we were still going to be tested on it. We filled out an evaluation and I made my thoughts clear
