Default Need New NoteBook. Which one?

My ancient laptop that was about eight years old and weighed like 20lbs crapped out over the weekend.

But that means it's time to get a new one!!

Last time I went for big-screen. But I quickly found I'm primarily doing web and email when I use it. So this time I want to go for light and portable.

What notebooks do y'all recommend?

Get a Vaio if you want light and portable. I got the Dell 8600 because I use it as my every day computer. It's lighter than a desktop but not by much

I just got a new dell inspiron 6000.
Pretty light... relative to my old one which was probably similar to your ancient beast...

15.4 inch widescreen and all the goodies... they're pretty cheap and I really don't mind carrying it around. its pretty light.

Vaios have something which is known as "sleeping sickness" .. they last initially for about a year before you have to get them returned to base as they just start to shut down .. they overheat due to shitty heatsinks used (which although helps their parts and support) does nothing for the end user. You can buy these decent hezatsinks and get them put in for you to remove this problem as Sony sure as hell wont put them in. That said, Toshibas / HP / Alienware seem to be the most stable at preset ..

I can attest to this.

I'll never get another Sony. Go for the HP, it's kicking ass in all the tests that the geek sites put these through.

Ok, so we got two recommendations for HP, one for Dell and two countermands on the Vaio.

I definitely need something for travelling. Won't be using it as a desktop.

Any more suggestions?

The viao will cover you for "now and then use" but don't depend on it. Mine lasted 11 months of "now and then" before turning to shit "all the time", it's back with me now after being "fixed" for the second time

My old computer was a Dell (desktop). And my laptop then went South was a Dell. Not sure why everyone likes Dell's -- except me. I think they suck!!

I also don't speak Hindu for the support service translations.

My favorite is when you contact them online, they say something like "My name is Hrutiuditdid. But you can call me Yehieditisastata." Why not just make it "Anne" or "Jane" or something easy?

My wife got the new sony a few mths ago so I just asked her why , and she said..

a.) because it looks cute
b.) because she'd rather choke on her own vomit and die than take my advice over computer purchases as I tend to destroy them anyway

The funniest thing, Peaches, is someone a few months was telling me -- not sure if this was Dell or one of a billion other companies -- calling somewhere for support and this guy with the thickest Indian accent, so much that's he's nearly not understandable -- says "call me, Bob". Of course it came out sounding like "Boob".

And the caller was like, "Bull! What's your real name?"

"I must assured you kind madame or sir, my name is really Boob."

"Oh yeah? Where do you live there, Bobby?"

"I-I-I I live in Cle-vuh-lund, USA. I am Boob from Cle-vuh-lund. Go baseball team from Cle-vuh-lund! We rain!"

"Rain? Rain? Oh, reign? You mean Rule?"

"Yes, yes, we Cle-vuh-lund team we rule. We number first!"

Default Re: Need New NoteBook. Which one?

So I started researching, came up with this at ZD Net:

Quote:
Ultraportables

Ultraportables are the frequent fliers of the notebook world. No, they can't match the performance of their bigger brethren. Plus, their displays top out at 12 inches or so, and they don't have internal CD or DVD drives. But a few ounces here and there can make a huge difference if you spend a lot of time on the road. These systems are so light and small that you'll barely know they're in your laptop bag. The tiniest--sometimes referred to as subnotebooks--have 10-inch displays and cramped keyboards. Because of the trade-offs, ultraportables have never been hugely popular in the United States, but as performance improves and more users ditch drives and exchange files via e-mail instead, these little laptops could be poised for liftoff.

• 4 pounds or less• Less than 0.5 inches thick• Small displays (12 inches or smaller)• Slower mobile processors, less memory, and smaller hard drives• No internal CD, CD-RW, or DVD drives• Fewer ports• Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional

Thin-and-lights

A thin-and-light offers the best balance between portability, performance, and features--especially for business travelers. Power-tuned mobile chips, such as the Intel Pentium M, now give these svelte systems performance that rivals that of notebooks twice their weight. Add in their 14-inch displays, combo CD-RW/DVD drives, and wireless networking, and thin-and-lights let you leave the office behind without missing a beat. It's no wonder this has become the hottest category of notebooks. You'll pay a slight premium for these do-it-all laptops, but for most business users, this is the best choice.

• 4 to 6 pounds• Less than 1 inch thick• Midsized displays (12 to 14 inches)• Powerful mobile processors, lots of memory, spacious hard drives• One swappable internal CD, CD-RW, or DVD drive• All standard ports• Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional
I think for the extra pound or two, and extra half-inch width, I'll get myself one of the thin-and-lights.

As I'm looking for an under-a-grand one, after doing more research, I'm now leaning towards either one of the Toshiba Satellite M55 series ones or an HP dv1000 which has surprisingly good features and design. (Surprising in that it's definitely not "my fathers" HP of yore.)

The Think Pad isn't bad at all if I want to jump up to $1,300. Has that fingerprint reader log-on and security features up the wahzoo. However as I don't plan on walking around with the secret schematics of a Fortune 100 company's new prototype death-ray satellite, think I'll go cheap instead.

Thinkpads are rock solid.. I used to have a tiny X20 which survived being sandwiched between my back and a marble step at great force The screen was half smashed, but it still worked perfectly.

The new thinkpads have harddisk "airbags" aswell. Built in motion sensors that stop disk activity if you throw it accross the room, drop it etc.

ermn why do you need support ????

it is windows, it is just a laptop and best of all it has an instructions manual.

jeezz

the only time i called tech support was to find out if my acer could take a pentium 133 instead of the pentium 90 cause that was not in the manual.

if you have to call tech support for a laptop then you got what you deserver LOL..

the only thing that can go bad that you can not fix with software would be a hardware problem then just send it back. and make sure you have a back up.

this reminds me of nick´s wheel chair joke

The Toshiba is very light. 14.1 inches and weighs under four pounds

But I found it to be a little too delicate.

The one I just ordered is a Lifebook from Fujitsu.

Drav, I have both a Vaio and a Toshiba. Both are more or less fully loaded with extra pepperoni. They serve me quite well.

How did I know you'd be chiming in?

Does Netpond pay their mods? Maybe then I could afford a good one.

Oh you mother fucker...

I explained to you , I am a very poor man who lives within his means and there is no way that Oprano can ,at this time, afford to pay salaries to , I believe the words were "a bald fuck such as yourself" , though at some point in the future it may be possible.

Tell ya what.

All Oprano mods can have a profitshare.

You owe me 2k
