If you are a small site, you have to promote yourself. Cash programmes are the last resort. Whenever I do the numbers, they just don't make sense unless you have something very unique and saleable. It is not girls that sell, it is ideas that are valuable and put gas in your Porsche. A good gag always sells and if you have that, you don't need a cash programme.

Why not just promote yourself? You already have the product, just package it, get involved in a niche that suits you, do some traffic exchanges that are complementary, and run it up the flag pole. Affiliate traffic is the number one most expensive traffic you can buy. As a small business it is best to avoid it where possible. There are also way less expensive ways to get focussed traffic than affiliates. When those avenues have been explored and are producing, then it is time to consider affiliate marketing.

There are ways to evaluate the success (profitability) of a site that does not include my own affiliate sales figures or any insider information. Simply being observant over time, paying attention to lifestyle changes major purchases etc. that show up in the day to day updates on the site and in posts to boards, journals, blogs, etc.

Affiliate program promotions are always going to be the most obvious, but if you're observant you'll also see other promotional avenues being used by many of these same sites.

Are there amateur sites making big money that don't have affiliate programs? Sure there are.

Are there amateur sites making big money that do little promotion other than their affiliate program? Yes again.

Well, you see, Toby. This is not necessarily bad advice. However, speaking as one who has arguably more intimate knowledge of independant website marketing, my advice was for a prudent strategy that is the least expensive and easiest route to immediate success. I will say it again. Affiliate marketing is hugely expensive and unless a new website is well funded and confident of success, not necessarily the best strategy. For instance, I buy better traffic that converts like a son of a bitch from magazines and will outperform any affiliate strategy for a fraction of the price. That is a good roi. I am not poopooing affiliate options, just suggesting that in the first instance it is not always a prudent option because of the breathtaking expense involved. And, of course, there is the obvious...why pay for it when you can get it for free option.
edit: another reason not to use affiliate marketing to launch a new site is that it can lull one into thinking that this is the answer and make you less likely to do your own legwork and set up personal business relationships.

That is true, but it still costs. You can pay me now or you can pay me later. The you can pay me later option is always the most costly. What I am talking about is free marketing like link exchanges. The mag advertising is a bargain, but not necessary to start. There is also no point in buying traffic that you can get for free. When you have exhausted your free sources, then it might be time to move on to an affiliate model.

Ok, my first post on Oprano in a year. Here's my view, from what's happening with my clients now:

- www.brookeskye.com did over 200 joins per day with Mayors Money and did that for over 6 months, retention is great because the girl is on her cam everytime we shoot and everyday, most of the day...the numbers are off the chain.

- www.katiekaos.com is new and doing 30-40 joins a day and she's a bitch that won't do anything, just unique content we shot and a natural redhead

we've shot other solo sites for the big players...some of these girls are cute, hot, awesome, and they just don't sell...still haven't figured it other, other than getting enough webmasters to promote them and giving them the tools to make it happen

We have 3 hotties staying at our house now shooting for pornpayouts.com that should do well. The girls are great, the content is high definition, the team include Janell who used to be with topbucks that will be promoting them. But again, even though I think all 3 girls are awesome, I bet only 1 of the 3 will get 75% of the signups...so many variables.
