Default Re: A Few Words about the Mitchell Brothers (And Others)

I worked for Jim and Art during a time of great change for both them personally(Artie's escalating behavior, Jim and his right hand manager picking up Art's slack), and for the industry(porn movie theatres closing all about the country w/ the advent of the VCR). If you are a woman working the stage I feel for you that you did not get a taste of what these guys were all about. Jim had a printing press in the basement of the theatre and independently published "The War News", a lefty paper. Yes, there were countless trials and lots of attorney fees, we owe a debt to the Mitchells who did truly believe in and support the first amendment. Less well known than Flynt but the patriotism, love of the constitution, and the fight and will in these men made them admirable and interesting. Hunter was not a night manager, as you will read- he hung out playing poker as did R. Crumb, various musicians, artists, people who cared about life. He was the most progressive employer I ever had, having worked in several fields in different parts of the country. He built the most upscale club in perhaps the country, was interested in the women as individuals- held STD workshops for the girls, etc. Yeah, he was one of the good guys. Yes, he shot his brother- but no one doubts how much they loved one another. The day he shot Art an era was over, only now it is put to bed. RIP Jim and Art, together, again.
