I don't enterly agree with this. I understand how the porn network works and the benefits of being "known". Maybe it works in cases where you're all selling the same shit in a different package.
The quality of product is the key to success. You might be able to herd them in, sign them up for a few bucks but they are not going to stay. Plain and simple.
So lets take a "wanna be" porn lord with no damn money. He comes to the boards, gets his ass ripped a few times and makes an ass of himself. All he has is himself because he has nothing and in order get anything he's going to have to work his ass off.
Now take a "wanna be" porn lord with an outstanding product. People are going to be all over his shit. He can be the biggest idiot on the planet but if he's able to get his HOT ASS PRODUCT out there and surfers are hungry for it, no one will fucking care. In fact he'll become idiot famous.
I'm turning my sites into free community sites and loaded with upsells. In the last few years I make more money doing that anyhow. BUT if I was still actively focused on the game I would be hunting down who had the best product out there that would appeal to my surfers. The problem is that my sites are niche fetish/bdsm. Try as they may few content companies and programs offer, what I would consider, quality fetish bdsm.
