Actually rhetorical I'm more interested in Venice, thinking Rome is too dirty and foul.

You really need to do some research. Venice is the most foul dirty city in Italy....the canals stink to high heaven. If you are going to go to venice it needs to be in the winter. And BTW, if you don't have a hotel in venice, they limit the daily visitor quota so you might consider that in your plans. Just a helpful hint.
