Always make sure that you use the right bait.
After determining the bait, make sure you use the right size hook. Too big of a hook and nothing will be able to get their mouth around it. Too small of a hook and even though they swallow it, they will be able to spit it back out.
Once you have determined the bait and hook, you need to get the bait onto the hook securely making sure that the fish can't see any sign of the hook or knot in the line holding the hook.
After that, it is just a matter of patience. You cast the line, sit patiently and see what bites
