Being that kind of poor gives you a perspective that truly helps later in life. It was also, oddly, a great way to raise kids. My kids valued everything they got and were never greedy like a lot of their peers. They also became absolute sharks when shopping at thrift stores, swap meets, yard sales and the like.
My daughter phoned me once about "the greatest pair of shoes she'd ever had in her entire life." She was truly triumphant over both acquiring them...and especially what she'd paid. 25 cents at a neighbor's yard sale.
Whatever else I do in my life, I can always say "I raised kids that can fucking *cope*!!" I like that.
