Thinkpads are rock solid.. I used to have a tiny X20 which survived being sandwiched between my back and a marble step at great force
The screen was half smashed, but it still worked perfectly.
The new thinkpads have harddisk "airbags" aswell. Built in motion sensors that stop disk activity if you throw it accross the room, drop it etc.
