Hey Gonz
I don't know. I don't do much with programming books other than use them to keep my end table level. But there are some good books out there I'm sure for anyone that learns better by book. I usually figure stuff out by trial and error combined with existing knowledge. That works for me because I have a programming background and as far as programming goes, coding is coding, it's just a matter of learning the syntax of the language that you are using.
For the most part, the "books" I reference myself are:
The php manual and
the MYSql manual
I have both of these downloaded and available from my desktop and they are usually open when I am writing any php/MYSql stuff. But again, if you have a programming background then you know what you want to say usually and you can just go straight to the language reference to figure out how to say it in php/MYSql.
The php manual does have a nice little getting started tutorial in it at
http://www.php.net/manual/en/tutorial.php It takes you through a simple "hello world" script and also shows how to look at the various phpinfo available on your server and then takes you through a couple of little "useful" scripts. It is as good a place to start as any
