i used to think this was a predominently genetic issue. now i am not so sure.
I think sexuality is one part sociology or socio-cultural anthropology (would explain alot of periods in human history) - and another part genetic, since this is nature´s code in our evolution. Its the play between those two that determine our sexuality.

From a genetic point of view, then we have sex to reproduce. So when we choose our sex partner, then we are looking for someone who is our best match for our genetic code. We use our senses to find our best genetic match - ex. smell says alot about ones immune system, similar facial features (reason why many couples look alike or why the different human races look different) gives an higher possibility that the genetic code from each partner will be part of the new baby. And thats just two of many genetic things our subconscious use to select our sex partner.

Now having sex from a socio-cultural point of view, then we are in very complex area... why is homosexuality more common in western cultures, then in more remote cultures? Why is polygamy accepted in some parts of the world, and not in others? etc. I´m sure that there could be made atleast two right answers for each question, because the human social side evolves much quicker than our genetic side.

I´m also sure that in less than 50 years, then we will be able to take a genetic test, and then be told which possible sexualities we have in our gens (probably going to be used when making "designer babies"). However society will still be the main "tricker" in which sexuality gens become active.
