I thought the biggest difference is
I could relate to the Ramones singing "It's the end of the Century"

Well that and I was 7 years younger, fuck I wasn't in my 40's

Not sure if there are actually 100 companies/people who now can push 100 sales to porn on a daily basis

Edited to add- other differences include -information flowed much more freely on boards (Oprano is a huge exception), a successful piss could launch a million dollar business, billing models were a little different and more lenient (which may effect why there are so few 100 join a day whales now), the internet was still considered novel by many, the average surfer hadn't been educated or spoiled by free (which may also effect why there are so few 100 join a day whales now), mainstream was behind adult in terms of traffic, money and tech and TGP really didn't exist
