Yes, they will keep dancing...
Image optimization...lessee.. First you need a program that will allow you to "tune" a jpg or gif.
I use photoshop a lot of the time, but I also batch process stuff through superjpg and I know there are tons of them out there.
The first thing you do, if the settings are available is change the resolution of the graphic (always work with the original or a LARGE image if you are shrinking down). First thing I do is set the resolution to 72 lines per inch. Then I resize the image shrinking it down to the desired size. Then, usually, you would save it as a jpeg and you would set the settings for a jpeg to give you the best quality at the lowest space (it is always a trade off of sorts). Usually these settings are available at save time or under the properties for the image.
Photoshop has an automatic jpeg high, medium or low (the high, medium, low is garphic quality) Other programs show this as a percentage (for comparison photoshop high quality under their "save for web" button is 60%) some programs handle it through a sliding bar wizard type thing that you slide between High qualit/big file and low quality/little file type settings.
Anyway, you play with the settings until you have them where you want them (I usually go by eye) and then save it (being careful of course to not wipe out your original in the process)
anyway, that is the basic idea. It is easy to do and saves a ton of bandwidth across time.
