If there was a draft like it was structured the last couple of years it existed here in the states - based on birthdate alone - an awful lot of your typical Bush middle-class WASP Republicans would become anti-war in a heartbeat, if it looked like their Johnny (or Janey) might have to get a gun.

If it was structured the way it was during most of the years following WWII, it would cause concern among young people, but not nearly as much as if it was equitable.

Two problems that a draft presents/won't solve:

1) If there really is a genuine turn-around in the economy - in other words, if it ever generates decent paying jobs - recruiting will suffer, but not nearly as much as retention will. This is not a problem that can be dealt with via a draft.

2) The services today are set up for folks who WANT to be there. Draftees (and pseudo-draftees that join a service to avoid being drafted into the Army) present a number of problems that the all-volunteer forces don't have the time and resources to deal with.

Oh, and for the record - during the Vietnam War, only pussies went to Canada. The folks with the guts and integrity of their convictions went to jail.
