a lesson in Asian cinema...
;-)
Hideo Nakata directed Ringu (the movie The Ring was based on). The American remake was done by Gore Verbinski who also directed Pirates of The carribean
Ringu and The Grudge movies (there are 4 of them) have no relation to each other other than they are ghost stories. Ghosts in Japanese folklore are usually women dressed in white with long black hair covering their faces, much in the same way we think of ghosts as a guy in a sheet jiggling chains.
Nakata is directing the sequel to the Ring because Verbinski is busy with Pirates Of The Carribean 2 and 3
The Grudge remake is being directed by Takashi Shimizu, the original director of the Japanese films (Ju-on, Ju-On 2, Ju-On: The Grudge and Ju-On: The Grudge 2).
The Grudge contains stories/segments from all 4 of the Japanese versions. I was a little letdown, but still enjoyed the movie. I'm going to see "Saw" on Monday (no babysitter tonight so can't see it tonight) and have high expectations for that movie.
I recomend checking the originals out. If you like movies like The Grudge and The Ring, I recomend Darkwater (moves a lot slower those those two, but a damn good movie) and The Eye (one of my favorites of 2003).
If you want to go nuts with a great Japanese film that doesn't have a ghost in it, but does have 15 and 16 year old kids fitted with exploding neck collars forced to kill each other off until there is only one survivor on an island with weapons ranging from machine guns to frying pans, check out Battle Royale (a movie that will likely never get an American remake ;-)). The sequel was pretty good too...
