One group of people invented many and refined more the tactics of how to fight an unwelcomed professional and highly trained occupying army through acts of terror and violent resistance.
Losing the "conventional" war this rebel/guerilla army , despite having ,by some accounts, less than 40% of the backing of the population as a whole , fought a war of attrition against the invading/occupying army.
The Commander ,worshipped by some and despised by many , realised that the occupying army would face discontent at home as time went by. This discontent would rise greatly if say prisoners were lynched (an act considered barbaric by the civilised world) rather than , as was traditional , paroled or traded.
Additionally victimising and brutalising , in particular ,certain ethnic minorities that supported the side of the Occupying army because of the civil rights the occupying army offered this minority, would certainly help.
Further , As time passed, he realised correctly, that other foriegn powers he knew with an Axe to grind against the occupying would offer support making it untenable for that Army to remain.
That commanders name was Washington.
