Personally I think it's a good thing.
We've already talked about the problems with too much *free alcohol* in other posts, the kind of people it attracts and the problems that it causes. PLUS there was a point where there was just TOO MANY parties going on all at the same time. You can only cram so much into a 3-day convention. We were spending an hour here, an hour there, 30-minutes at this one, a quick hello & good-bye at that one... it was ridiculous.
Choice is good - I wouldn't want to see just one party each night, that eliminates any kind of option whatsoever - but too much is still too much no matter what.
