Australia's population hits a cool 20 million

AUSTRALIA turns 20 million on Thursday. The 19,989,472nd Australian, Max Cotter, will celebrate the national milestone in the traditional patriotic manner - by drinking, crying and falling asleep.
His mother, Caitlin Cotter, says she's proud of the diverse country into which Max has been born.
"I think it's fantastic," says Ms Cotter. "I think it opens your eyes and broadens your horizons. It allows you to realise that people are just people wherever they come from."
Our population has doubled in 44 years. The ten millionth Australian was born on March 10, 1959, into a nation far removed from the world of Max Cotter.
"The period between 1959 and 2003 is one of tremendous change," says Professor Graeme Hugo, demographics expert and Professor of Geography at the University of Adelaide.
