There is also an issue of 'percieved value' that you are up against when you charge so little for the membership.... a lot of surfer's will 'percieve' that if the membership is that low.. so might the quality of the site...
Like Nick said.. VERY little difference in joins between $7.95 and $14.95... I've played with it quite a bit....
