Well. You don't need an article to prove that the US "wasn't there for" Israel all the time.
They objected Israel's move to bomb the Iraqi nuclear reactor
They supported the creation of armed palestinian authority
They proposed a "peace plan" that has a palestinian state timelined into it regardless of fullfilment of the security requirements
They object the currently discussed deportation of Yasser Arafat
(These are just very few examples that some of them are very relevant and current)

But the thing is, you have to realize..
When you say US and Israel, you are not talking about static entities.
Both countries change over time, both in spirit and policy. That's one of the disadvantages of having a democracy With changing presidents like JFK, McCarthy, Bush, Reagen and others, having presidents and senate majority from both Democrats and Republicans, expecting the two countries to have a static relation is too much to expect.

Also - you are talking or a timespan of 6 decades. A long time to claim the policy has been fixed.

But looking at the bottom line, the main issue is that after filtering all the little issues arising over time, there is a simple common thread connecting the two countries and stems from the people of these countries, their belifs, social and moral values.
