Since when is it surprising to see politicians not being the best historians in the world? :P

If anything, US has been ambivalent and unclear about its stands regarding the middle east and still is to this day. That is both a necessity (being a superpower and needing to play the role) AND a weakness (weakening their own stand regarding security affairs and the issue of terrorism) of the US.

I made the only point I have to make. There has been a "special relationship" between the U.S. and Israel for a long time - longer, IMHO, than that article indicates. I think that's a good thing, personally, and have since the '67 war.

That does not mean that I think that U.S. foreign policy should be determined by the Knesset. That certainly does not mean blind support for any policy that may be adopted by the Government of Israel.
