In the year 689 AD, there was a Battle of Karbala in which Hussein's son Ali was killed in battle.
Ali was the founder of the Shi'ite sect of Islam.
Shi'ites view this as the martyrdom of Hussein and the Battle of Karbala is considered one of the most important events in Shi'ite history.
