There's a whole process from meeting someone on a board to actually doing business with someone but the boards are a great step one and very effective as such.

I don't read Setgo...and won't , so I didn't read the whole thread, therefore I don't know how much of what she said was taken out of context. I will say this much:
I owe Lee Noga a lot. She helped me make what was a small fortune (at least for me) back in 1997 with my audio cds.
That was the first time I realized that one could work for a couple of weeks and end up making 40K...that was very, very sweet money back then. Heck, I was making 6K a month working 16 hour days..this was gravy to me.
It was Lee's idea to produce audio for non-exclusive licensing to websites. Up until then, I had done some exclusive work for large websites, at 30-40 dollars per file, but I made close to 750 dollars per file HER way.
I wanted to price my cds at about 750 each..she said, "don't be INSANE...price them low and sell in quantity". She marketed my cds and I got paid for every sale, on time, until that crook Bonnie took over Zmaster.
Lee was a great inspiration to me in many ways. She was extremely innovative and although not all of her ideas made money, I imagine that I'm not the only person in this business that she helped out. Most have forgotten that, conveniently enough. How many of us had our first legal content from Zmaster?
But I digress. I agree with Colin's statement. The relationships that started for me on chat boards, including that which I formed with Lee, were the main reason I had the success I have had in this business. BUT.....

I don't understand when people are negative about messageboards
|
I do..they can be very negative indeed when used the wrong way (HEQDVD for example)..and lord knows I was guilty of just that for a long time.
One has to realize that some of the people flaming them are cowards hiding behind a computer (I'm not going to mention any anonymous nicks here, lol) and not take the things they say seriously. It takes a long time to learn how to "consider the source". Even the most experienced among us fall prey to that.
Also, it entirely depends on the way the board is run. Some boards used to (and still do) exist just to flame other people and discourage newbies. A board that is there to foment webmasters conducting business with each other is a very positive thing. Boards that make people afraid to post for fear of being jumped on for any reason at all aren't productive at all except for the elite group of cronies that dominate them.
It's amazing how different many of us are in person as opposed to our personalities on these boards. Until I met a lot of the people I had "pissed" with on boards, I didn't quite get it.
It's so easy to sit behind a keyboard and blast away because you've had a bad day or it's fun to say something that will make your friends laugh. Many of the posters don't realize that their posts can actually wound people.
In a way, I can understand why Lee seems to be lashing out at everyone around these days..the hits she's taken have been pretty far below the belt in many cases. I don't agree with everything she says, but I have to say that I can empathize with her in many ways. I've been there.
And no, Sergey..I'm not going to say that you're the reason I'm still in this business, at least not again :P
