If you are doing any SERIOUS traffic, C is the ONLY way to go. It will hands down flaten PERL, and even beat the most efficient PHP scripts. We have all of the in/out cgi's of
www.pickapicka.com coded in C/MySQL and we have all of our banner rotation scripts in C. Any thing that does mass traffic must be in C
