This is what makes the cut in business...
Do you make a good living on the internet? You know...live in a nice place, drive a couple of nice cars, travel, eat in nice restaurants, go base jumping, hang gliding, surfing or whatever else it is you enjoy. Do you own your own place...not mortgaged to the hilt. Do you have a good investment portfolio...property, equities...whatever? That is what makes you a success. If you are not, good luck to you and I truly hope that you will make the cut and that is what you can learn. However, are those who are giving such "sage" advice in that position or are they just blowing smoke. I suspect the latter. Now is the time to put up or shut up. No bullshit. Are you the former or are you the latter. I personally will start the ball rolling. This is what I do for a living. And contrary to popular belief...sorry to say....I do very well in this business and fall into the former category. Now, lets see who actually puts up around here.
Oh, and no when we stories about how we used to do so well....we have heard them all from nick and trev et al. This should be interesting..... |
Re: This is what makes the cut in business...
For me, personally, being comfortable in my confines is what makes me feel successful.
Do I own a porsche? Nope...my 300 pound ass would look kind of dumb in it if I did. I do drive a couple nice cars that get me where I need to go when I do, indeed, leave my cave. Does that solidify my success? No. Do I own my house? Nope...at this time, we are renting a 4 bedroom home trying to decide if we would like to build a house here in N.C. It has been quite a culture shock moving from the "big city" here. So, we decided to give it a year, and if we are still happy living here, then we'll build. When and if I do build my home, will then I be a success? No. Do I go base jumping, hanggliding, surfing, etc. lmao...you ever seen a 300 pound man do those things? I do bar-b-que while wearing a kiss the cook apron and wielding a 12 oz. can of Budweiser. Does that count? Guess not. Here are the things, I feel, make me a success. I worked concrete construction for years. It was a thankless job that required many many back breaking hours of hard labor. It paid the bills, but it was like every morning when that alarm clock sounded at 4am, I just wanted to shoot someone. I was stuck, at 23 years old, babysitting men twice my age who had decided that a life of drunken construction work was what they wanted to do. I was sick of 50 year old men asking me, "what you want me to do next, boss?" 50 year old men who had been doing construction work, in my field, for more years than I was alive, who had no idea of the next step in the process. Couldn't read blue prints...couldn't be counted on for anything productive...yet, when the job ran behind, these men didn't hear a sound out of my superiors. I was the one getting the ram stick from the rear, not them. I was in a dead end rut... Now, I do something that I LOVE to do. I have always said, I am a pervert by trade. I wake up in the morning, go fix my coffee, eat a boiled egg. I take my morning shit while reading the newspaper. I go to my computer desk and begin work for the day. Now, this work consists of, basically, looking at tits and ass, all day, and putting them into graphically pleasing layouts among other things. Real tough job I must say after years of walking around in the mud, shovel and laborer in tow. My kids get home from school and we have afternoon snack. We watch some cartoons together, play outside, play Xbox whatever. Mom gets back home and we go out to dinner most nights. Nothing fancy granted. Actually, it's probably a little bar-b-q place here in town called Parker's which has the best pork bar-b-q and cornbread sticks in the world. Dinner, for all 4 of us, usually runs around $50-$60. We then leave, come home, spend some time together and go to bed. Last year, we went on vacation to various locales here in the U.S. 3 times. I own two timeshares but no second or third house or anything. I live a somewhat simple life, but I am happy. This is the happiest I have ever been in my entire life. I am comfortable. I don't scrape to pay bills. My kids don't want for much. I am relaxed now. Does this all count as successful? Or do I need to be some eccentric money bags looking down his nose at the worker bees? What I do find kind of funny, however, is most of the spouting done on these message boards by the "haves" is usually accompanied by some sort of secrecy about what it is they actually do. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't give two shits what ANYONE else on some porn webmaster forum makes, but I just think it's comical when I hear that, oh so cliche retort, "I don't need to show you what I make, just trust me, I pay more in taxes than you make in a year..." or some variation of it. It's a good show for the idiots who sit all day and refresh the page, but those of us who are making a living doing this, and striving for more...don't really give a fuck lol. Good for you...glad you could find your path and make the best of it...but seriously...who fuckin cares? </rant> |

Once upon a time, there lived an board owner who was quite an average fairy tale ruler, with one exception: he cared much about his clothes. One day he heard from two swindlers named Rhetoricol and Joesha that they could make the finest suit of clothes from the most beautiful cloth. This cloth, they said, also had the special capability that it was invisible to anyone who was either stupid or not fit for his position. Being a bit nervous about whether he himself would be able to see the cloth, the board owner first sent two of his trusted men to see it, Toba and Rcourto. Of course, neither would admit that they could not see the cloth and so praised it. All the townspeople had also heard of the cloth and were interested to learn how stupid their neighbors were. The board owner then allowed himself to be dressed in the clothes for a procession through town, never admitting that he was too unfit and stupid to see what he was wearing. For he was afraid that the other people would think that he was stupid. Of course, all the townspeople wildly praised the magnificent clothes of the board owner, afraid to admit that they could not see them, until a boy said: "But he has nothing on"! This was whispered from person to person until everyone in the crowd was shouting that the board owner had nothing on. The board owner heard it and felt that they were correct, but held his head high and finished the procession. Rhetoricol and Joesha escaped during the procession when they realized they had been found out. The End |
Re: This is what makes the cut in business...
Rolo, I gotta say, that was sooooooo unoriginal. I have seen that cut and paste about so many people on so many boards. Your creativity is boundless. Your wit, stupendous. Duh.. Oh yeah, like I said...blah blah...yadda yadda..emprorers new clothes...blah blah...puppetmaster...yadda yadda.
Rolo, wtf is wrong with you. Why are you so angry? bTW, still no update on your success and why anyone should listen to you. Oh yeah. Everyone was a surfer before they were webmasters. Get over it. It is just the way it works. Listen up grasshopper. |
Re: This is what makes the cut in business...
All I have seen in this business, when it comes to boards anyway, is smoke and mirrors. I learned a long time ago, believe half of what you see with your own two eyes and nothing of what you hear. To any newbie reading this...that is the best single piece of advice I could give you. Don't believe the hype. Unless you personally see it with your own eyes, (and even then have your doubts) don't believe it, don't trust it, don't pay it any mind. You may just find yourself chasing shadows and ghosts.
That being said, as long as my bills are paid, my wife is happy, my business associates are satisfied with my work and my kids get what they want for christmas...I could give a rats ass what any of ya do. That is an ethic that has eluded many in this business me thinks. I subscribe to the "my own backyard" rule first and foremost. It's like any other business though I suppose. Hell, when I was in lowly construction, one of the main topics of conversation amongst the workers was always what someone else was earning and the fact that they didn't deserve that kind of money, as opposed to conversations about what they could do as individuals to increase their own revenue. I guess it probably transcends every job in every market place. |

rhetorical wants peace and love too. afterall, thats what he was saying again and again while he was getting beat into the ground. he even started a thread saying how nice it was that things died down. a casual observer might have noticed the peace and quiet and thought this was a nice place to be. of course, it only took a couple days before Joe and Graham had to start trying to start shit again. i am forced to give them the benefit of the doubt as presumably, their constant attempts at baiting people and starting fights is somehow in the best interest of gonzo's vision and consistent with their own self professed intentions of creating a constructive environment where learning and helping others is THE central focus of the board. |
