A friend of mine had made an offer of $7000, which automatically became the starting bid. The next bid of $8500 is a genuine (i hope) bid by someone who i do not know.

Lame. This is a new business plan, build a crappy site, with no traffic and then try and convince someone its a gold mine waiting to happen - that the sites just needs a little work and resources and it will return untold riches.
