Hard copy magazine start up in the internet age?

good luck, you need LOTS of it.

for $2.8 million I can buy 12 titles with a combination of 200K in circulation already, and newstand rack space. I know the principle and can do this deal anytime I want it .

I am not one to burst a bubble, however I think you should map out a new plan.

Well I do not want to sully your good name, so I must politley disagree with you. In fact I am not even going to drink RED wine anymore

I do not want Mike AI to continue to attempt to make derogatory comments about your razor sharp mind by attempting to say we agree on things .

I mean according to MikeAI I am not a smart man, so you would not want to be seen publically taking the same stance as me anyway. :)

So I would say send all Start up ideas to Jimthefiend he is new start up expert ( this way we can not be guilty of colusion in business practice)

Re: Masterpiece Magazine looking for Venture capital

a few questions just for fun:

1) why would someone pay to have their pics in a magazine, when they can have them all over the web for free and even create their own website for free in a few minutes?

2) how do you intend to distribute such a magazine?

3) why do you think there is a demand for such a thing?

4) how do you intend to get the word out about this opportunity to people who would be submitting photos?

JR 02-12-2006 01:15 PM

Re: Masterpiece Magazine looking for Venture capital

ok. i am bored.

a few more.

1) who are the principles in the company?

2) what are they bringing to the venture? how much capital? their roles? what are they risking?

3) why should someone invest money in YOU?

Re: Masterpiece Magazine reply to all

Well, believe it or not, this is an ingenious idea. Think about the auto trader. Why would people put their cars in a magazine instead of the internet? How many people you know would put a nude photo on the internet? A lot of them. To me that's not physical evidence. Physical evidence is something you can pack up and take with you. Masterpiece Magazine is that physical evidence. You would love to tell your buddies I was in a magazine, because thats not common in the world. Sure you can put your photos on the internet, but hell you would get lost in the millions of other photos on the internet. Then it really wouldn't mean shit. You would break out of the box with masterpiece magazine. Then, your buddies would envy you because you were in a magazine and now they want to be in a magazine. So you tell them, CALL ME and get ya credit cards ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JR,
you got over this child head...

Joe,
Mike can post whatever he wants....I have an indenious idea:
why don't we start publishing the magazine and charge him money to print his posts?

I have 2 potential subscribers, we are ahead of saintjaq
in "identify demand" department!

to any serious business person, your answer says; "well, i dont know. I dont have any real experience in business and business management. I know nothing about the magazine business and want to jump in with both feet with YOUR money and basically all i have is what i believe to be a good idea and will hopefully figure things out as i go". good luck with that sales pitch. haha :)

why not go for the gold and colonize mars and establish the space tourism industry? you will certainly be a billionaire in no time. its a great idea right? thats all that matters. everything else is just details.

the name "masterpiece..." is terrible as well. it conjures up images of great works of art, refinement, sophistication etc and people will open it to see the nastiest images they have ever seen in their lives.

you have a business management degree and yet your post suggests you are about 19 and taking breaks from playing Half Life on your Playstation to post solicitations for $250,000.00 in venture capital on porn messageboards.

investors don't typically invest in ideas. they invest in people. ideas are the easy part. turning them into a profitable business is the part that takes talent.

you could just answer the questions so we don't have to "assume"

you had the perfect chance to promote yourself, your ideas and possibly sway people into believing you actually had the talent and ability to pull it off. instead, you used that opportunity to show you have absolutely no clue at all.

just a bit of forewarning.... if you are asking strangers for 2.5 million dollars, you might run into a question or 2.

you know, we new welcome people to Oprano......

But damn dude, you idea sucks donkey balls and you get pissed off at us for it ???

JR ( even though he is a right winger) has asked you some very good questions and you have yet to provide an answear.

how do you expect anyone that serious about business to think you are? did they teach you these tactics in school when you got your degree? and speaking of wich where did you get your degree from ?

if it is just the idea you bring to the table ( wich for the record I think sucks) but lets just say it was actually a good idea, why would I not just steal it and run with it if I have all the money and the contacts, and all you have is your degree and a good idea?

ok... one last attempt to clue you in on the basics. if you answer the questions, it would determine peoples level of interest if any. it could lead to more questions, start a serious discussion and get quite a few people with money to perk up and listen to what you have to say. its your chance to pitch your idea and yourself. so far, you really suck at asking for 2.5 million dollars.

no one is interested in an abreviated "i have a dream" speech from a complete stranger who looks like he just woke up and forgot to take his meds. you have to do better than that to peak anyones interests.

I meant it was free to the "buyer" ;)

I daresay Autotrader's website gets a LOT more business than its paper mag which is why I think they give the paper one free now. IOW, the paper mag really isn't worth much, IMO.

what Magazines that doo 100,000 customers did you study ?

how do they get their customers?
How will you get yours?

are you familiar with the policy of newsstands? or do you plan on just going to a store and adding them ?

How much will it cost you for a distributor to handle things?

Where do you plan on hiring these magazine experts from ? How much will they want in salary?
How many will you need?
How many sales people will it take to reach this number of 100,000 ?

Joe, its ok. I knew at birth that I had the burden of carrying the liberal kooks along to the promised land. To some people it would be a curse, but some of my favorite people in the world are liberals. I am happy to protect, and handle the real world so liberals can pretend that Bush is more of a danger to the world then Ahmadinejad.

As a woman, I wouldn't want to pay to post my pictures anywhere like in a magazine, where you would be reaping the profits off my imagery, without some kind of compensation. This is a bad business idea... you're hoping to make money off the people who both put their images in the magazine, as well as off the customers who you are hoping would buy the magazine. Given that there are several individuals out there with completely whacked ideas of what is "erotic" nevermind awful photographers, I think this is a bad route to go. You'd end up with some truly awful images, and I am not seeing any indication that this is a well thought out plan either in this post, or in any of the rest of the thread.

Answer me this, if you can. Why should I pay you, to make money off me? If money is to be made off one of my personal images, I'd quite like to be receiving some of that cash.

Comparing a magazine of images to the Auto Trader, is again very poor business thinking, nevermind business planning. The auto trader first of all is free to those who wish to look at it, (because they are hoping to BUY A CAR) Individuals PAY to put images of their car into the Auto trader, because they are hoping to SELL THEIR CAR. I am not offering up prostitution, so really when I am to reap zero financial benefit from paying for this personal advertising (which is advertising nothing beyond my own arrogance) then there is no reason for me to pay. I can be arrogant elsewhere, and share my pictures through other avenues, for free. (This could very well be why a magazine like this does not already exist, because it is a BAD idea, not an ingenious one)

Getting defensive over the fact that people other than you, (and I'm going to add that you're very biased since this is YOUR idea) don't like the idea, is very immature. People are going to post their "assumptions" and their questions and their opinions and we don't have to do that to make you look like an idiot, you're doing a fine job of that part all on your own.

Your attitude is increasingly unprofessional, and leaves me to wonder whether you have in fact any kind of a degree beyond a high school diploma. If you have even that. Asking questions is hardly jealousy, and pointing out that you are being an idiot is not jealousy either. Its just that we are superior to you, plain & simple. Don't get upset about it, the sooner you realize & accept that no matter how far up the ladder you may climb that there will always be lessons to be learned & someone who knows more than you, then the sooner you'll be able to move up the ladder with the aid of the knowledge of those who DO know more than you. :) What's more, is that to gain investment as you call it, (or a handout is what it truly looks like you're asking for, and a rather large one at that) ...you DO have to gain approval.

"You are the type of people.." --You have no idea who we are, you have no idea what our experiences are, yet you come here looking for a 2.5 million dollar handout, refuse to give a business plan, refuse to answer any reasonable questions, become argumentative, and stating elaborate brilliance such as "I will hire the right personnel for the job." That's real in depth. And here I was thinking you were planning on hiring the wrong personnel? </sarcasm>

Now, you said it will be broken down into two parts. Newsstand & customer version. I'm curious, who are the people who will buy this magazine off the newsstand, if not customers? I'd think of a different term for this "customer" version of yours.

And finally...

If you assume that all that there is to learn in life, has been learned from your classroom, then you have already failed before you have even begun, and your professors have also failed to teach you that EXPERIENCE tends to be the best method of learning. You're not talking to classmates here, you're talking to superiors & you'd be well advised to take a different approach than the immature & defensive & close-minded one which you have displayed so far. Your determination & ...passion, is a good thing yes, however if used unwisely it can also be a fault.

Sin,
I appreciate your indept analysis of my post, but you only picked the negative points about my professionalism and my magazine. You get your picture in my magazine for a small fee. That's a choice the customer would have to make. There are millions of diff. people throughout the world., not just Sin. Your post shows me that you took your time to really pick out all of my comments towards others. And your wrong, unless you are interested in being partners with masterpiece magazine, and by that I mean email me personally to get my full business plan, then I don't have to amuse you with an explanation of my business. Again, I really do appreciate your comments , but lets focus on my business idea. I know there are people out their that try to make an ass out of people. Please, lets not be one of those people. Again If you do not like my idea, then don't worry about it.
Thanks
Saintjaq

Yep I am a type of people

If you can turn down the ego a little (some very successful people can't but kept it hidden until ....) it might benefit

in a few hours here you've gotten parts of an education that you didn't get with a 2 year whoop de doo degree, ponder that a moment if you will

I wish you some success but currently your presentation is lacking
But this is an intersting place to fine tune it

Psss what about women get in the mag for free and men have to pay
(your male to female applicants may be unequal to start)

How are you going to get apps to start (let's say you'll need 25-50 total apps to start)?

Who is selling your advertising, what type of advertisers will take space in your publication (think you're going to generate enough revenue from just apps and newsstand sales)?

You've got an idea and a lot of moxie .....

Your welcome
I find this interesting because your flirting with one of my favorite business concepts

Find a need and fill it with others efforts
(I learned that from a wise man and have watched a few people ride it well)

Masterpiece Magazine is that physical evidence. You would love to tell your buddies I was in a magazine, because thats not common in the world. Sure you can put your photos on the internet, but hell you would get lost in the millions of other photos on the internet. Then it really wouldn't mean shit. You would break out of the box with masterpiece magazine. Then, your buddies would envy you because you were in a magazine and now they want to be in a magazine. So you tell them, CALL ME and get ya credit cards ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Id rather tell my friends I hang out with Jenna Jamison and Janine and have the pictures to prove it.

come on people.. he has a business management degree from a 2 year school... didnt you know, that guarantees success and means your qualified to solicit 7 figure sums to run a business you have no experience in!!!!

and lets not forget once a very highly skilled adult webmaster ran a pretty large magazine and closed it down because it wasn't profitable. he only cited reasons that deal with the underlying business model as the reason, but thats no reason to be jealous of the idea and pursue it on your own!!!
