The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
I figured with xmas fast approaching I would treat myself to a new desktop, I usually build my own but after looking at the Dell website I'd be hard pushed to buy and build a desktop as powerful and as cheap as the Dimension 5150C.
I'll be ordering this little beauty this week but before I do I'd like to know if anyone has any recommendations or warnings about the Dimension range? |
Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
Are they still offering free delivery, cause that's about 80 quid.
It's what always puts me off. |
Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
nothin' wrong with a dell. buy a cheap one, toss in the best hd and ram you can get your hands on, no regrets. just don't buy lcds or plasmas from them, they overprice their waaay old inferior stockpile of shit based on their good name. they won't burn em for the insurance money, they'll just burn the dipshit general public instead.

Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
This little puppy comes with:
160GB HD Intel Pentium 4 Processor with Dual Core Technology (3.20GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB ) 128MB ATI RadeonTM X600 SE 1024MB DDR RAM 48x CD-RW/DVD Combo drive 17" Analogue flat panel monitor all for $1,007.90 CAD, seems like a good'un to me when compared to the likes of pc world. |
Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
I don't know about pcworld, my gamer geek friend buys from ncix.com

Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
By the time you throw in the monitor it is a better deal though yes..
And if I were to buy a "storebought" computer or a 'brand name' computer, I'd get a Dell |
Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
17 inch? what's the point? I'm tellin' ya...get the bare bones aside from a good proccessor... and upgrade the ram hd and lcd yourself. Takes 5 minutes, for a better system, at a lesser cost.

I'll give the 17" to Toni and just stick my 19" on the system if I get it :) |

That would be "special" indeed, but I think Toni would like it more ;) and not up her ass before anyone says it :p |
Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
I still use the big old chunky monitors, haven't found a flatscreen I really love yet, with designing when I stare at them for a longtime my eyes go wiffy.
I did buy a tft but gave it to the missus and got myself an oldschool one for less than 1/2 the price. Trouble is finding a store where they have all the monitors set up for you to play with them for about an hour to give them a true test. |

They do clear a helluva lot of space up on the desk as well. :) |

Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
I know everyone always bangs on about Dell being rubbish etc, but I've had four or five of the beasties and so far, they've all come out of the box, worked, and carried on working without any probs.
The only thing I would suggest is going with the UltraSharp flat panel, they're supposed to be heaps better than the standard flat panel. |
Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
Cheers Jeremy, one thing I have noticed is that when I go through the order process everything seems to be an extra. Sound cards, speakers... everything lol. Still cheap as buggery though. :)

Re: The Dell Dimension desktop pc.
Dell can be a bastard like that - at least they've stopped adding on the most expensive service package by default.
If you're adding loads of things to the base model, it may be just as wise to pick the middle or top model - they may effectively do it at a bundle price. About the only addition I would reccommend is some speakers & sub-woofer, if you haven't already got some, I bought mine (Altec Lansing) 3 pcs ago and they still chuck out some impressive sound, even with just "on-board" sound rather than a fancy schmancy sound card. |

But, on the other hand, what I dont like about Dell/brand names, is 2 things. 1, that video card is crap. 2. you dont know what brand of motherboard, and more importantly, which chipset. Also, an analog flat screen is ridiculous... Problem with a CRT is that the numeric signal that describe what should be displayed on your computer is converted to analog, hence, a lost of quality. Bright idea #1, let's make a monitor where we still convert to analog, and than we convert it back to numeric, so we can get a 2nd loss of quality... That's the Analag LCD for you. |

Lol, dell isnt bad for business PCs. And the remark about analog LCDs isnt really related to Dell... I was just venting. |
